  1. No sooner do I speak, when the Mailperson bringeth the goods! Time to load her up  Glenn
  2. Thanks guys, sounds good. Yup, I should have thought of the demo. Completely forgot about it since I knew I was getting the sim anyway. No sweat, I know I'll enjoy it, so this was pure curiousity, not concern . Glenn
  3. I'm waiting (very patiently, I might add ) for my copy of CMAK to come in. I was just wondering though, so I can get as much reading done ahead of time, are the basic commands & game/sim mechanics the same as CMBB? In other words, if I know how to play CMBB, will there be much transition to CMAK? Are there any large differences, or are they mostly minor? I have CMBB and have been playing the AI partly to get up to speed on CMAK, but wondered if I was out to lunch on this (mind you, CMBB "ain't half bad" in it's own right! ). Many thanks! Glenn
  4. COOL! I've REALLY got to get into the human vs human bit. That's something I've done very seldom, and the result will likely be a bloodbath for a while at least. Having said that, I'll take my lumps in favour of learning. I was hoping my CMBO would have arrived in the mail today, but no such luck. Hopefully tomorrow. I'm also waiting on CMAK, so lots to look forward to, but getting impatient . OK if I contact you once the game(s) come in? I have a feeling you'll teach me a thing or three, and that would be just fine by me. Glenn
  5. Jeez, that sounds/looks ugly Dandelion. My graphics corruption was only on bootup of the system. As soon as the video drivers were "engaged", I'd get these weird lines all over my screen - horizontal as I recall. You could barely see anything through them, and if you tried to run any applications with it like that, you'd corrupt your icons semi-permanently (running dxdiag would fix the icons after the reboot). Yeah, I know what you are thinking, but honestly, I've never done drugs in my life . In any event, it would necessitate a reboot to fix, and sometimes 2 or 3 were required. However, once it came up with no graphics corruption, I never experienced any oddities after that for that session. CM ran fine, except of course you couldn't see fog, which really bugged me. I now run a Matrox G550 after asking a few questions here and at the Adobe Photoshop forum, and am extremely pleased with it, but it is NOT a gaming card by any stretch. I do notice a slight performance decrease in CM when I'm moving around the map, but nothing I'm going to worry about. At some point soon I'll add a second machine that will have an NVidia based card (probably 6800), and all my games (which aren't that many) will go on it, and this one will be reserved for photo-editing only. That will bring back full performance of CM for me, but again, it's quite acceptable the way it is now for that. I'm afraid I'm not of much help for you here. Hopefully you can get this one figured out quickly. I do recall having numerous problems with ATI drivers, and in fact, switched to Omega drivers for Radeons almost as soon as I got my new (then) system home because the ATI drivers were terrible at running Flight Simulator, and they didn't seem in any rush to fix them. When I upgraded the ATI drivers to try them out again, I found even more problems, so went back to the Omega's. It's been a common issue with ATI I'm afraid. That's not to say NVidia doesn't have their share of issues, but lately they seem to be doing a better job of fixing things than ATI, I'm afraid. FIW. Glenn
  6. Good heavens!! Humility in the "younger generation"! This is really refreshing and I'm impressed  . In all seriousness, the only reason an 18 year old might be "bad" at it is an experience thing. You've not had enough chance to watch the older guys make some really dumb mistakes yet. Once you've been around for a while, you learn what works and what doesn't, by the mistakes of others. In any event, given your attitude, I think you'll find yourself ahead of the curve and are probably better than you think . For me? I love CMBO. I lost my disk a while back, and have been missing it to the point where I've re-ordered it. I've been playing CMBB for a bit now and I too like the greater versatility (and probably greater reality) of it, and I'm certainly looking forward to getting CMAK when it arrives in my mailbox soon (also ordered), but make no mistake - I really enjoyed CMBO. I've yet to get into any human-to-human encounters yet, but as soon as I get back up to speed again I plan to start (and probably get thrashed in the process - and I'm NOT young!! ). So, count me in for CMBO. Nostalgia? Maybe some, but it's still a damn good game/sim! Glenn
  7. OK, here's the "rookie question of the year" for you . I'm setting up a new CMBB scenario and have added a bunch of trenches. Now I'm wanting to place some infantry in those trenches for the start of the scenario (I'm still in the Editor at this point). I place the squad on the trench symbol, but it's still shown as being in "scattered trees" (which is the terrain where my trench is located). Is there a way to actually place these squads such that they begin the scenario IN the trenches, or will they be assumed to be in the trenches once play starts? If I use the Dig-In command with a squad over top of a trench symbol, will that do it, or will they just dig a foxhole within the trench, thus ensuring they will probably never see the light of day during the battle because they'll be too busy climbing out of the cave I've just developed for them  ?? Thanks! Glenn
  8. Mine sure did when I pulled it out in favour of the Matrox Glenn
  9. Radeon/ATI & GeForce are a contradiction in terms. GeForce is an NVidia based card, and yes, it will show fog very well (along with all the other effects). Are you sure you aren't talking about the 6500? That's an NVidia designation. There is no way (that anyone here I'm familiar with know about) that ATI cards will show fog in any CM game. Sorry . Glenn
  10. http://home.cogeco.ca/~gdphoto01/E-Snow1.jpg Thanks for all the tips, mods & advice over the past while I've been coming here. May you all have a very happy holiday season and a great New Years. Glenn

  12. Hehehe, sorry guys. Not only did my Radeon 9800 Pro 256 not give me fog, but I think it was responsible for a bug that has intermittantly caused serious graphics corruption (to the point where I'd have to reboot because I basically couldn't make anything out on the screen). Probably CMX2 will fix the ATI fog issue, but as I said, my next machine will have an NVidia card in it. Too many issues too many times with ATI I'm afraid, at least for me. Glenn
  13. Well, got my new Matrox G550 installed today, and then fired up CMBB. I now have "official" fog! The 2D stuff looks even better than before as well, so it looks like a win-win situation for me. Early next year I'll likely get a second machine that I can use as a back up and games-only unit, and will go NVidia at that point. Till then though, this is great. Thanks to those that offered advice and suggestions. Worked out just great  Glenn
  14. What video card do you have, and is it listed as an issue in the Specs for those games? Glenn
  15. Hi Brent, Yeah, I'm DEFINITELY interested! I still have yet to receive the game though, and it could be another month before it gets here. I'm also in the midst of setting up a small business which has to be completed by the end of this month, so December is looking a bit tough at the moment. After that though... . Could I drop a post in the Opponent's Forum once I get the game and things are set up (and when I have an email account for the game set up - I don't want to mix it with my business email)? Would be great, if that's not too long for you to wait. Thanks Brent. Glenn
  16. Thanks Redwolf! You've been a big help, as usual. I've ordered the G550 and will install DX9 at the shop. This will help with my photo-editing as well. Appreciate the advice. Glenn
  17. Oops. I was just at the Matrox website comparing the various cards. Looks like the G440 & G550 only support DirectX 6, and the P650 goes to 8.1. It might be tough finding DX 8 anymore, and DX 6 will be long gone, so I'm thinking I might be stuck here. The version of DX I have on now is 9.1c. The specs for CMBB (which are those of CMAK, except for the RAM needed) does call for Directx, although I don't remember seeing what version. Am I SOL, or is it likely the card ships with the required version of DX, and does anyone know what version of DX CMBO through CMAK requires? If I go to the P650 as mentioned, I start to worry about driver issues once again (as mentioned - I've had it up to here with driver problems ). Thanks - appreciate the help once again. Glenn
  18. Thanks guys! Sounds good. Yes, at some point I will need a second machine, I'm quite sure. Hopefully next year. One will be strictly for games (probably NVidia based video) while the other (likely this one) strictly for my photography business and general computing stuff, and will have the Matrox card. I am going to price a G550 this morning. After giving some thought to the 650, it sounds like the 550 will do everything I need (and very well), and we know it runs CMAK, etc. properly, so that's all I'm looking for at the moment. Plus, it's less expensive. Many thanks guys. Appreciate the feedback. Glenn
  19. YES!!! DO IT, PLEASE!! . That would indeed be a real boon to many of us, but none more than I. Great idea! Glenn
  20. Oh, forgot to mention - I got the companion book to go with CMAK as well. I did this based on the forum thread regarding how good/bad the book is. Sounds very worthwhile, so I'll have some reading to do besides just the manual . Glenn (PS - being single, I get to spend as much time as I can with the games . However, I have a part-time photography business, so that is my 'limiting' factor. Oh well, nothing's perfect )
  21. By the by, if I were to go to the G550 (I'm very tempted - excellent price and outstanding 2D graphics, from what I've been told), AND I get fog, etc., in CMAK, etc., then that would be the best of all worlds. Battlefront are about the only games I have now, and I'm running a P4 3.0 GHz, 800 FSB unit with a gig of RAM, so do you (or anyone) think the G550 would slow game play down noticeably given the rest of the unit specs? Thanks! Glenn
  22. Good Stuff! Thanks Guys!! I also want to get Ortona from Michael Dorosh. I remember his scenarios from his site he had up a while back for CMBO. Man, he sure had some good stuff there (his new site looks equally good). Looks like I'll also have to get a new video card. I'm one of those "suffering" with the ATI card and no reduced vis as a result. I'm not heavy into games (other than Battlefront), but am in photo-editing, so as long as the new video card doesn't slow these games down too much, I'll be a happy camper. Thanks again - I'll go get those now (even though they say about 2 to 4 weeks for delivery to Canada due to Customs ). Glenn
  23. OK, the deed is done, and it'll be on it's way tomorrow, probably . Again, thanks for the help and advice. Looking forward to getting into this one. Glenn
  24. Hi Guys, Man, thanks a bunch for this! There is some great sites and great information. I really appreciate your info here. Looks like I'll be ordering CMAK ASAP . Some of the names I remember from before, and some sites are new to me, so this is really helpful. Thanks once again! Glenn
