  1. Being just a lurker most of the time since February, I would like to add to the cheers for the liberation of Kherson by the UA. This is a great day!

Although the RA seems to have managed to complete a decent retreat on the eastern bank of the Dnipro, it is still a retreat;  it is evident to anyone that they have lost the only big ukrainian city conquered so far.

This cannot go unnoticed among Russian military and citizens. Will Putin be able to keep control of the situation?

I know we are in early days here but this whole thing has a half-hearted feel to it.  I am left wondering why Russia is going through all this theatre when it can simply draw new lines on the ground, shift the goal-post and come up with whatever fabricated "victory" it wants, just like Putin did in Mariupol.

Re-draw the lines on the map and declare the DNR/LNR as "free", point to this strategic land bridge as a major victory and come up with some BS narrative that "this was the plan all along".  I also suspect that the Russian higher-ups already know this hence the somewhat tepid start to this whole thing.

I don't think Putin is in a corner on this, he is just trying to figure out where to paint the arbitrary line of "victory".  This has been a failing on the western analysis side from Day 1, we continue to see this war through our own lens.  What this operation should look like in western frameworks must be what Russia is doing - big sweeps, dramatic deep operations.  What victory looks like, again in western terms, and projecting it on the Russians.

I am getting the sinking sense that all Putin needed to do was get into Ukraine and shoot up the place, and he could spin it as the greatest victory since the Great Patriotic War.

He just wanted to lay waste on a neighbor country in order to deny or delay its development and welfare. It's a barbaric act, perpetrated by an evil, sick man.

If he just wanted Donbass, why kill civilians/military and destroy properties, as well as send to death ten of thousands of his own soldiers in the useless Kyiv operation? So in Putin mind, life have so little if not no value?

I am not an expert in military operations, but each and every day this war makes very little sense.

An astute observation!  It is true, all the equipment that Russia leaves on the battlefield in this area can not be recovered easily until the rest of the offensive fails.  This denies Ukraine the quick refitting that it is used to.  Score another success for the great strategists in the Kremlin!

but shouldn't be an advance in rough and wooded terrain more easily exploited by the defender to set up ambushes?

A great blow for Ukraine! I wouldn't like to be in the shoes of the one who has to tell Putin...

Probably, as was said previously in the forum, a carefully planned attack by the UA, but I am truly amazed that the Russian Navy flagship got caught so sensationally by surprise.

Another sign of the general poor quality of the Russian military apparatus? One would think that in a conventional confrontation with NATO, the Russians would capitulate in a short time ...

Maxar Satellite images are incredible.  They are scattered throughout this tread if you want to see what I am talking about.  They can even pick up bodies in the streets.  One of the images was used to debunk the russian claim that the bodies in the streets of Bucha were done by Ukrainian soldiers or British Intelligence after the russians left Bucha.  The image debunked that as the bodies were already there before Russian forces left.

Maxar is a private satellite imaging company.  Imagine the even greater fidelity of military spy satellites.   The russians can't pull off any strategic or operational surprises with all the electronic eyes on them, to answer a question you asked earlier, Huba.

What seems strange to me is that Russia should have spy satellites too. Why can't they have the same level of intelligence on UA positions or movements?

Do we know for sure that it comes from NATO asset outside of Ukraine airspace? Was it satellite or something like E8? Either way, holy crap that's impressive.

It's satellite. It's a constellation of SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) satellite-borne sensors owned by this private company (Capella Space https://www.capellaspace.com). Usually this constellation is meant to be used for weather purposes.

the amount of propaganda BS that comes out of his mouth is impressive.  the really worrying thing is that I don't think there are many possibilities for dialogue with this Russia

On the pro-Russian side, there's some stories going around that the satellite imagery showing the bodies in Bucha might be fake. This is mostly based on this "analysis" from "Southfront", claiming that none of Maxar's satellite had their orbits going over the region during the dates mentioned on the pictures: https://southfront.org/more-evidence-more-doubts-about-bucha-massacre/ .

I looked into that, and as expected, it's a poorly-made fake counting on people being too lazy to check the satellite tracks themselves, which can be easily done by using tools like this one: https://in-the-sky.org/satmap_worldmap.php

On each of the dates, March 21 & March 19, Maxar's satellites (specifically WorldView-1 & GeoEye-1) passed directly over Kyiv.

Following what Der Zeitgeist said, I checked Maxar satellite imagery search website (https://discover.digitalglobe.com). Between February 28th and March 31st, there have been 4 overflights by Worldview 2 and 3 and Geoeye 1 very high resolution satellites over Bucha (on February 28th, March 18th, 21st and 31st). So plenty of images to check, contrary to what Southfront claims

  9. Hi everyone,

I've been absent from Battlefront.com forums for a long time. When this war started I thought that a discussion on the subject was surely ongoing on BFC forum, so it's since the end of February that I am following this thread daily, even more often than TV news or social networks.

I just wanted to thank BFC and all the people bringing forward this thread, sharing invaluable news and information on this tragic war.

I hope that Ukrainian people regain their freedom and peace as soon as possible

    Niccolò

  10. First wargames I played during 1982-84 were Squad Leader on tabletop and some Desert Rats wargame on Sinclair Spectrum 48K.

OMG! Your post brought to my memory things I almost forgot! Desert Rats for Spectrum! Actually my first computer wargame!

I played SL as well in those times, with Fulda Gap (SPI?) and Seelowe (don't remember the publisher)

  11. I still have big issues with the 1.11 patch, even if I completely deleted the "Z" folder. I reverted to 1.10 (CW forces module) and all goes fine. But when I reinstall 1.11 patch, problems comes out again. British soldiers are shown with berets instead helmets, with no gear and no weapons. Some scenarios won't load (actually the game freezes) after the briefing screen.

Is someone experiencing the same issues?

    Thanks
