  1. 1) I really like the scrolling movement when you hold down the right mouse button to change the left/right and up/down viewpoint angle. I also really like the movement when you hold down the left mouse button for screen scrolling. Both have got smooth acceleration and work nicely. Great job.

On the other hand without the button pressed, moving the mouse to the edges of the screen still seems kind of fast/jerky. I'd prefer the acceleration (just like when the left button is pressed), and would like to be able to adjust the sensitivity/speed.

I'd also like to be able to change the height on the screen at which the left/right scrolling movement changes to left/right viewpoint angle change. It's currently too high IMO.

    2) On more than one occasion, in more than one game, moving the mouse left or right to scroll around the screen only scrolled so far. For example, I could scroll to the left, but only to a certain point. Holding the right mouse button to change the viewing angle around fixed things up.

    3) When scrolling around the screen, I often see the round unit circles popping up and down like a pop-up frog game.

    4) When creating a move order for a unit and placing the cursor at the new location, I see some funny screen redraws (high res to low res and back again).

    5) While I'm at it, someone else requested the ability to toggle/adjust music levels separately from in-game sounds. I would say that's pretty well standard far in games these days.

Hopefully, these are on BF's rather lengthy to-do list.

  2. Responding to the question "Realtime or WEGO or both?" I'd be happy with realtime with a pause capability.

Furthermore, you could *optionally* add functionality to the pause, similar to what you have in a chess game. Too much pause by a given player may reduce their points.

Of course, I'd love to be able to play back at any time up to the current turn.

  3. Add up all the players on all the ladders, how many are there? A few hundread? I even factored in each and everyone of the 200-300 had 10 buddies that players but never posted. We all know that is certainly not the case. the bottom line I am making is that BFC does understand their numbers, numbers no one outside BFC has seen.

Ok just saw you had about 300 users. Even tho some of them are duplicate users I am sure, lets us still use every single player had 10 people that didn't play but played multi-player. Lets add 200 for all other web sites. 500 users each having 10 players, 5000 multi-player users. Still a very small percentage of users.

    . . . .

All that being said, I continue to lobby internally for something for the tcp/ip crowd. be it pauseable tcp/ip, wego , SOMETHING. here is to hoping I succeed.

CM's multi-player system has been and still is very kludgy (and that's an understatement). It's no wonder that their MP figures are low. It's unfortunate that BF doesn't appear to have the funds, expertise or drive to implement a user friendly multi-player matchup and game play system. If they did, I'm sure we'd be seeing much higher multi-player figures.

In any wargame I've ever played, the most immersive/fun was when I was playing with/against real people.

Oh, and I hope you succeed as well. To NOT have pauseable RT or WEGO in their multi-player is very unfortunate indeed. You could even optionally add a timer to the pause capability (sort of like chess).

  4. Currently, CM goes into 'full screen' mode.

What would be really nice is using Windowed mode. From there, you could have other Windows.

I've successfully used Windowed mode in X-Plane 9 with additional 3rd party Windows, and it's great. In addition, World of Tanks uses Windowed mode, and there's a LOT more animation going on than in CM.

I think BF's challenge is their shoestring budget.

  5. Yep Sunday night now and no News from BFC. I just have a hard time seeing why they cant just put a darn release date on the game. They say a "few days" but thats it! Come on, some of us have already paided for the preorder edition, so cant we find out when we get what we paid for!!!!! But no they just take our money and then toy with us. Guess thats what we all get for buying the preorder.

I can only assume this was posted with humour in mind.

  6. CMBB manual pg. 8:

“Action in CMBB is paused to allow for player input. We feel it is conductive to players’ development of thoughtful and realistic strategies, rather than the “click fest” that some fully “real time” games can become.”

...sorry but somebody had to mention it. :D

If the RT multiplayer is pausable like the single player is, then great. If not, then it's a damn "click fest", and they should be <remaining comment withdrawn by author>.

  7. Anyone with small children knows that PBEM is the only way to do it. ;-)

Yes, indeed. Even with older kids, I still like the ability to have a choice of PBEM or RT.

On the other hand, 18M files is just ludicrous. What are they including? Graphics? Movies?

The RT, however, should include either (variable speed and/or pausable RT) or (WEGO). Last thing I want is a clickfest.

  8. Hmm making rather a big issue over something that tbh is a very small thing especially on the very long list of things to be done that BFC probably has, and considering they only have 2 programers to do all this you may have a long wait.

I really hope that BFC makes enough money to hire more people. For instance, as as been mentioned elsewhere, they really could do with a useability expert (among others).

Oh, and I recently bought the CMAK/CMBB combo as well as pre-ordered CMBN, so no threats from me.

  9. I warned my wife about my gaming addiction before we got married (in '87).

That was reinforced on our 5th wedding anniversary when a new game of 'Empire (for UNIX)' started up. We got 4 extra hours worth of turns that day. Needless to say, she still remembers that.

CM:BN will pale by comparison to others games I've played endlessly - such as Return to Castle Wolfenstein or World of Tanks.

  10. . . . I was really disappointed that the PDF manual has "CM:BN Demo" stamped in the middle of every page, making it a pain to read.

First the useless online reader, and now this? . . .

I would certainly have enjoyed the demo and these past weeks of waiting for the release much more if I had been able to read the manual. Now it looks like I have to wait until the full game is released. :(

Yes, that black text watermark in the Adobe Acrobat file was a bit of a nuisance. Poorly conceived, it was.

From the what were they thinking department, the only thing worse than the online reader was the steel box video on Youtube. Ghastly.

OTOH, the game looks like a lot of fun, and I'm sure that patches will fix a lot of problems that people are/will be encountering.

  11. Am about 3 games into CMBB/CMAK and started a PBEM game where I had to purchase a ~500 point force. I didn't even know you could buy your own force, so I didn't choose very well.

My questions (for a meeting engagement) are:

    - any generic recommendations (do's and don'ts) for the makeup of this small force

    - any recommendations on how to use this force

    Thanks!

  12. The last time I bought off the shelf was in 1987. Tandon 8088 or 8086. Quite good. I can recommend that one :)

It would be a big improvement to just make sure you get a case that takes a regular size PSU.

My only off the shelf desktop computers were:

    - IBM PC with PC DOS 1.0 (1981)

    - Amiga 1000 with AmigaDOS 1.0 (1985)

Otherwise, all my desktops were custom built.

I tend to find that NVidia is better for OpenGL gaming.
