What you see isn't whats actually there. Lot's of it is abstracted. open field doesn't mean flat putting greens, there are ditches, grass, small rises, piles of stones etc. 50 men in a field and you in a tree like with an AK at 200m. They aren't going to go down like ten pins.
You open fire with an inaccurate automatic firearm, you're shaking, because there's fifty of them. You open fire, a shattering stacatto of fire rips across the field. The enemy men are suprised, their crouched, advancing posture presents a small cross section.
The enemy was anticipating some action, they hit the dirt. You can't tell if you hit them, they're already opening fire at you. You're not sure if they know where you are, or if they're just firing sporadically to keep you down.
You, fanatic to defend your home village, reload and keep firing toward them. Your hands are shaking, you're thinking of what to do. You can't retreat, if these men advance you die. A minute later (XD) one of thier squads starts up and runs toward the tree line, the others firing toward you.
Bullets smacking into wet dirt, rattling the trees and a small mortar has started shelling your fox hole. You reload and keep firing, the enemy squad gets close, you snap some shots off at them. One of them tumbles to the ground. You're not sure if you killed him or not. You'll never find out, because one of the other 3 squad's LMGs opened fire on your position.
7.92mm bullets smack into you all over, you finally take cover. You throw your sole grenade, and then notice a roaring, clanking sound. You peek up just in time to see the 75mm gun of a STuG III spout flame.
Lesson, warfare isn't a nice thing where you're in a perfectly prepared position with flat putting greens to shoot the enemy.

Well the lynx is a big and roomy tank with a lot of room for a penetration to not hit anything.

That's because almost all of 7.62x39 is steel-core
BTW it usually does, unless you're fighting a vehicle armored with boiler plate, regular ball ammo isn't going to penetrate more than 2-3mm.

yeah, I just used a PzIV in a CMBB QB yesterday, that was knocked out by a SU-76 that I ignored and stuck around for the rest of the game.
Su-76 survived three infantry assaults

Seems to be VERY cost-effective. Those Steil granates are very effective one hit killers.
I've had one take out 3 T-34s and a KV-2 while remaining uninjured.
Of course, agaisnt AI, I shall test it in a QB later today.

Well, the CM engine abstracts a good many things.
See how the Magnetic-mine range is 30m? giving a fire order in CM means that someone is running up to the tank and attaching a mine directly to the tank.

The thing I love in CM is that I NEVER save and load. I alway try to win the scenario whatever happens.
The satisfaction is much bigger if you win, despite the fact that I made a big mistake at the start of the battle.
But if you keep the troops (like in Panzer General) it will be a quicksave/load orgy. "Oh my super 5Star killer SSunit is dead *load*"
But I have full confidence in BFC team. If they will make a campaign system, they´ll do it right.

In CM I never order my squads to follow a vehicle unless it's engaging a seperate target, stopped, and most of the infantry around it is dead/cowering/running away.

{EDIT} However, my endurance is quivalent of a Green unit on Advance up a slope.
{EDIT-2} I'm pretty sure I couldn't hit anything moving. I'd rather be firing something with some more standoff than 30m

I always loved it in Close Combat III where I could foster troops through combat. Sometimes I would send my favorite squads into CQB, only to have the massacred
I was always depressed for several days when that happened.

Yes, top penetrations are modelled for everything, to test it I just made a Js-III (III!) catch fire!
I just made a huge pillar of earth, used 5m terrain, pillar elevation 18, and I set the rest of the earth to 0.
