  1. Very cool...I have found that (as a total n00b) I rarely play scenarios and always QB's. However I just dump everything on 'random' and 300pts (I like very very small squad ops) and let the comp pick everything. I think I am not doing myself any favours with this method although the load outs do seem somewhat balanced (for the most part) and I have been having quite a bit of fun...I just think I may be setting myself up for a beat down when I finally step off from the AI 'teet' as it were and finally face a living opponent. Anything more than a small engagement gets WAY out of hand for me. Anyway, well done...Ill have to give it a go.
  2. Congrats...be ready spend some time with a sore arse from being parked in front of your comp non-stop! I got my copy within five days of ordering and Ive been loving every minute of it. My only real advice (that was passed on to me from others here) is to play many many quick gen missions with 300-500 points and random conditions. I was getting a sound beat-down every time I played until I started to do this and go through a ton of ops and quickly develop my tactical skills...still no grog mind you but I usually beat the AI consistantly, although real life opponents still hand me my hat. Welcome
  3. Do you have to register at Tom's site to get access to D/L the mods? All the links to D/L seem to be broken. Ive noticed this at many of the other sites as well.
  4. I ordered on a Thursday night and had it the following Monday. Very quick. This game is now my total obsession, and this from a confirmed simmer. Previously I spent almost all my gaming time in WW2OL (which is still a really really fun, innovative game that gets a lot of my time) but this is sooo much different and refreshing from a tactical standpoint. Hope you dont have any plans for the next year or so...
  5. Thanks a bunch all! Great advice, yes indeed the concept of overwatch and bounding cover are some key elements that I have not been employing...as well as the use of smoke to screen suspected LOS that would leave me vulnerable and scouting / angle of attack on enemy armor. There is so much to consider and account for, and to work with. I cant imagine how any commander was able to accomplish all of this sucessfully IRL. Seeing men and equipment solely as tools to accomplish the end to your means...and then having the fortitude to order them on to accomplish those means as determined by you, the conductor in an orchestra of death and destruction. This game is truely amazing in its depth. As Patton once was heard to say... 'God help me, I love it so...'
  6. Yes, yes! I agree whole heartedly. Some advice given to me by some of the other vets around here has been to 'stick to the small engagements' and let the comp pick the units. However I do wish that there were a couple more n00b tutorials that outlined the strength/weakness of different equipment types and how to best utilize them. Oh well...just need to play more! Nolloff...Im going to email you for a copy of that AAR too if thats alright. Thanks!
  7. Ok...I must first say that Im relatively new to TBS games and really to strategy games in general but I do realize that the situation (terrain, objective, opposition) and equipment are the two major variables in determining sound tactics in battle. So, my question... What is (generally speaking) the most effective use of armor in combat? I had always assumed (thats where I went wrong!) that armor utilized as a spearhead supporting infantry is usually a sound bet (all other variables such as terrain, weather, and estimates of enemy strength considered). Yet most of my engagements so far (Ive only had the game for about a week) have been dismal defeats. If I attempted to spearhead with armor and support infantry following (using armor for cover) most often a couple of AT's destroy my tanks before I can get my infantry in a position to eliminate them. If I push with my infantry and use armor as a backstop in support from the rear my troops usually end up tangled in engagements with enemy infantry while my armor is decimated from AT and/or enemy tanks from waaay across the map. Any advice to a struggling n00b? I must say this game is mind-blowing and I love it. Realize Ive got lots to learn but hopefully can pick the brains of you vet grog's here and learn a thing or two about a thing or two. Thanks in advance!
  8. Ive ran into this problem last night...sorry I dont have an answer (Im a card carrying member of the n00b fraternal order) but Ive found unit control to be a bit maddening in most circumstances when they come under fire. Last night I had my HQ sneaking to the base of a hill to exert greater control on rifle platoons situated above on the crest. Well he took it apon himself to bolt head long up the hill a pull a 'Mad Ivan' single man rush on an entrenched HMG position below the hill. I could only watch in horror along with the rest of his platoon as he was promptly cut to ribbons. Ah, no matter. I would of had him shot for disobeying orders if he had survived anyway.
  9. Yer damn right Im a n00b...my copy of CMBB just arrived today!!! I cant wait to go home and get the demo off my HD and the full version on! So much for the HTML work I was gonna get done tonight... by the way, how DO you get the health bars to show up over the units? [ October 29, 2002, 05:36 PM: Message edited by: Kinjari ]
  10. My eyes, my eyes!!! The goggles, zay do nothing!!!
  11. Thanks for the warm welcome all! And for the tip about CMBO...Ill be D/Ling that when I get home *grin* I was tossing and turning last night trying to get to sleep but kept running different scenarios through my head about how to better overcome the second demo mission...Im in BIG trouble when the full game gets here!
  12. Hello all, Im new to the game genera and the forums as well and just thought Id say 'Hi'. Ive been playing the demo for a couple of days and just placed my order for the full game. All I can say is 'Wow!' The other strategy games of this type just dont even compare. Im not very good at this type of game (strategy) as Im mainly a simmer with WW2OL as my drug of choice but Im really looking forward to sinking my teeth into this and really learning some tactics and battle strategy. Cant wait for the game to get here, but in the mean time Ill be playing out the demo and lurking on these boards. See you all around the boards!
