By the way, who determined what is up and down when it comes to planet earth?...with the vastness of the universe it's a pretty arrogant conceit...pardon my ramblings, I'm busy setting snares for the mailman!... smile.gif

  2. I guess what bothers me is that you suffer two attacks before you can launch one simply because you moved next to a unit. You have the SEC attack then a follow up attack during the AI turn. I will agree though that I may be studying the warts on one tree too closely rather than the beauty of the whole forest, so I'll put my quibble to rest.... smile.gif

  3. With FOW on, Surprise Enemy Contact can occur, but I wonder if it is implemented correctly?

If you move a unit and an enemy unit appears next to it, surprise enemy contact occurs and the battle is then resolved. Shouldn't SEC only occur if you attempted to move a unit INTO an enemies hex? At 60 miles per hex, I don't think SEC should happen if you only move next to a unit.

In the French Campaign with FOW on, SEC occurs when a German unit advances to the border hex located to the North West of the Ardennes. The French 1st, 9th and BEF are shown and then SEC combat is resolved. I don't think the German unit should suffer SEC, for stopping on the border, it should only have happened if I tried to advance into one of those hidden units hexes.

Part of me thinks it's good, because it may increase the challenge, but it simply doesn't feel right to me....any thoughts?

Has anyone ever tackled SPI's War in the West and War in the East combined? The playing board was 7x7 feet and there were so many charts, you had to spread out, that you needed quite a bit of real estate to play the game. I had the map layed out for so long, that I was able to recreate Russian winters with the thick layers of dust that accumulated on the board... smile.gif

Actually it is out in computer form as well, called Computer War in Europe which makes it very playable, though there is NO AI with it. We even have a group to discuss it.

  5. Thanks for the reply Scott...I guess what I'm hoping to see from this game is an innovative Allied AI strategy that does not necessarily mean it's a forgone conclusion that they will invade France...perhaps an invasion of Greece, Norway, Yugoslavia, of even Italy would be nice. In other words, I hope the AI will look at all offensive options and not be so keyed on France as it seemed to be in your game. It will make replaying the game too predictable if that's the case.

I,ve never heard of "Luftwaffe", can you give a short description please?

If you are familiar with Talon Soft's Twelve O Clock High, it was similar to that, only 10 times better even for a board game...As mentioned the counter design was very well done of the individual aircraft...I think I'll do a bit of digging to see if I still have Luftwaffe. I do remember the first wargame I cut my teeth on, Avalon Hill's Kriegspiel. It would be considered a beer and pretzels game now but it sent me on my way...PanzerBlitz was my second game and I still recall the Kursk scenario as being my favorite...boy, we certainly are churning up some fond wargaming memories here aren't we... smile.gif
  7. One of the problems with attacking units simply to gain experience is that inevitably you have to restore your strength points. Doing this will then reduce your experience...has anyone taken the time to see if the loss negates the original gain? It would be a shame if you are taking one step forward two steps back....perhaps a future option might provide you with a choice of purchasing "green" or "experienced" troops to replace losses. The "experienced" troops would be more expensive, but you would not have as great an experience loss to your army.

You never had the chance to set up Europa I guess. Just the Fire in the East portion (remember I said "portion") alone is 6x8.

Then you add the Urals as well as into Low Countries and France with Fall of France, Merita Merkur gives your the Balkans, Western Desert is the Mediteranean. And that is just the ones I own heheh that's not the whole enchilada.

I have never had a warehouse handy to actually set it all up in one go before eh. :D

My God...How do you play the center of the board, are you tethered on a wire flying across the room?.... ;)
