  2. It's nice to know that even a microscopic message will be read by Madmatt ! Thank you for this answer : the "space bar tip" works ! :D:D

I know my problem wasn't so important, but it irritated me very much (I'm sure you can imagine this !). Last evening I saw your message, tested it and smiled...

...the forum is very efficient, even if your computer doesn't burn or explode, even if all your panzers don't appear pink on the battlefield ! Madmatt is there, looking at every little sorrow. Bravo !

I will look at CDV tech forum (if it exists) but I'm convinced that it's a bad imitation of BFC's one.

Thanks again ! All the best. smile.gif

  3. Hello there !

I've got a strange problem when starting CMBB. If I start it just after the installation, it works fine. But... ...when I reboot my computer, and then run it, a strange thing appears : the intro begins but after only one second it is reduced to a box named "Combat Mission 2" at the bottom of my desktop, in the menu bar (next to the "Start" button). I click on it, the box is resized to full screen and again, is downsized to a little box in the bar...

It continues during approx. 20-25' (duration of the demo I think), and then the menu appears correctly.

In my opinion, I need to inactive the intro, how can I do that ?

    - uninstall Quicktime (???)

    - check something in the user preferences file in the CMBB folder ?

CMBB version : CDV - French

    no patch, no mods

    System :

    1,7 Ghz processor

    30 Gigs

    ATI mobility Radeon

    Windows XP

I repeat : the game just works fine. It's only the starting of the game which is difficult.

Please help me to eradicate this problem !

    Thanx smile.gif

  4. Hello there !

Ok, I've made a good compromise between details and framerate.

1/ BMP files reduced by 75% are :

    - terrain textures (steppe, grass, snow...)

    - buildings and houses (normal and winter)

2/ BMP files reduced by 50% are :

    - Trees (normal and winter)

    - roads, train tracks, water

    - tree bases, fields, marsh...

3/ BMP files originals are :

    - ALL units textures (tanks, uniforms)

    - Sky backgrounds

    - Interface structures

For trees, bases, roads and other which contain pink spots, I only reduced them by 50% (I've tried 75 % unsuccesfully) using Photoshop, and with "Interpolation" to "Nearest Neighbor" in "Preferences" settings. It works (thanks mchlstrt :D ).

I've not mode any Color Downsampling.

Now, framerate is higher, and looks to be the same as in CMBO. Great !

If I have the time, I will list the BMP files I've changed. But for the moment, let's enjoy !

    Cheers. smile.gif

That is why I say the BB standard res could probably be dropped 75% for EVERYTHING. BTW, because of the way BO handles downsampling, & this effect seems to be improved but not eleminated in BB, it is important to have consistant 'Resolutions' across everything as much as possible, otherwise CM will dwnsample HR to LR while making LR into NoRes, & that is very noticable & distracting.

I see... In my opinion, the process must be used with HiRes textures only. Many light BMP, in BB don't need to be resized (doodads for example), but they're not so numerous ! According to you, droping all pictures to 75% produce a good effect, without altering graphics, and increase framerate.

You know, with my computer, framerate in CMBO is good, even with big maps (2500x1500 meters) and fluent, it's my objective with CMBB.

I think too that, before beginning, I have to make a good comparison between BO's BMP folders and BB one, in order to know what exactly, in BO, is a HiRes (size, dimensions). I don't want to downsize all textures too much, but recreat the same kind of graphics between BO and BB.

    Let's experiment !

  6. Hello,

Thanks for the tip with Photoshop mchlstrt, i'll try smile.gif

"At least some of the terrain elements can be swapped. I'm using my favorite roads, rivers and train track sets from CMBO in CMBB. You can always save the originals, try them and see if they work. I haven't tried moving the other way, from CMBB to CMBO, but the higher resolutions might cause problems."

Swaping BMP from CMBO to CMBB might be a solution too to improve framerate. Generally, CMBO textures are smaller than CMBB ones. But, looking at my two BMP's folders, it seems that only roads, rivers and train track sets are compatible. Maybe trees too ? If it doesn't, resizing is the last possibility.

Question : what do you think about resizing by 50% tank's textures and backgrounds ?

    Bye.

Ok... I think i've to make this list by myself

Concerning "Color Downsampling", I have done anything yet : my BMP are still 16 bits. Reading this thread, i've noticed that reducing the files to 256 colors doesn't affect the framerate.

In an other hand, I'm wondering myself about resizing the unit's textures (tanks) by 50%... in order to improve framerate again. Same problem with background pictures. I've also noticed that is a bit dangerous to resize BMP with "pink spots" (symbolising transparency). For now, I only resize "empty" BMP (without pink spots), so the trees stay the same as the originals. But, it may be possible to use CMBO tree textures, replacing big CMBB ones ? Here again a BMP list would be fully appreciated !

Anyway, I will continue my "Experimentations", and try "Color Downsampling"...

    Bye.

    PS : Who's BXX ?

    Hello,

I've tried to resize ground textures and buildings too, at 75% : a 512x512 BMP is now 128x128 (like many in CMBO) : the result is good, and the framerate seems to be better.

Photoshop can resize many pictures automatically. But i need a BMP number list, in order to check if i've resized all the files.

    Bye.

"No lo res textures exists currently for that, so I couldn't test (resizing a couple hundred BMPs manually is tedious and I don't know how to make that automatically...)"

I've checked it in Photoshop : it's possible ! :D You can apply a script automatically to all the pictures you've currently opened in the application.

Is there a list of BMP files for buildings, terrains and other big textures here ? With this list i could test resizing pictures by 50%.

I hope all this will be a good solution to increase framerate : I've downloaded a grass mod for CMBB. In the zipfile, i took a BMP file (16 bit color, 512x512 px, 679ko) and resize it the half, in 256 colors : 66ko !!

    Is that the solution ?

    Thanks for your answers.

    Cheers.

I believe BTS/BFC has said that reducing the number of colors on BMPs has no effect on framerates. Only reducing their resolution will help.

Yep, I did it (converting to 256 colors) on all 193K+ BMPs and didn't notice any difference in looks nor in framerate - but this was judged on sight alone as I don't know how to have CMBB shows FPS ...

Anyway it's a good deal overall for small HDs as HD space used went down 40%, CMBB weight going down from 1.16 Gb to 775 Mb smile.gif

I now have to try lowering res, I think a 50% reduction (in one dimension only) can be a good compromise in perf vs quality, the resulting res being in fact CMBO "hi res". HD space will be down another 30%, all will now fit unzipped on a CD ... smile.gif </font>

If the french expression for "WG Mountain" will start with "WG M", then the english version of the AntiCensorshipLoader will be fully compatible with the french version.

How is the french expression for "WG Mountain" in CMBO?

Yes, in french "WG mountain" would be "WG montagne", so no problem. But i can't verify in CMBO : i've got an english version... ...sorry. :(

But if you give me your estimations, how the units will be spelled, then i could estimate if the finished german or english versions of the Patch will work with the french version.

WG Infanterie/Infantry -> french: your estimation?

    WG Mechanisierte/Mechanized -> ?

    WG Kavallerie/Cavalry -> ?

    WG Gebirgsjäger/Mountain -> ?

    Ok.

Infantry is, in french : Infanterie

Mechanized is, in french : Mécanisé(e)

There's in another "e" a the end of "mécanisé" when the word associated to this adjective is feminine. For example, "Infanterie" is a feminine word so I put an "e". Also, be carefull with the accents...

    Cavalry is, in french, Cavalerie

Moutain could be translated, in my opinion, by :

1/ Troupes de montagne (which means litterally : moutain troups)

    ...or...

2/ Chasseurs alpins, which is a typic french expression (used today in the Army), and could be interpretated much more like "Gebirgsjäger" in german. "Chasseur" means "Jäger" in french.

The first solution is more "generic".

I hope all this is clear.

    Bye.

Please, french people visiting this forum, give me your opinions !

  13. Hi gentlemen.

My grandfather (mother's side) was hidden in a hospital in Paris during german occupation. Avoiding STO (obligatory work in Germany). As a young resistant, just after the Liberation (summer 1944),i joined the Free French Army and served in an infantry division. He fought in Vosges mountains, during this very cold winter 44-45, against children and old men of the Volksturm. Later, his feet froze and he was also wounded in Alsace. He went back to front in spring 45 and finished war in the Black Forest, in Germany.

My other grandfather had not a military experience, but lived near Lwow (now Lviv in Ukraine) as peasant. He saw WW1 as a child (born in 1908), and then soviet invasion in 1939, Barbarossa in 1941 and he definitly left his home with nothing but his family in summer 1944, during the Lvov-Sandomierz operation. Before coming in France, he worked in Pirna near Dresden. He told me that, during the massive raid of the city, it was possible to read a newspaper without any light...

Bye and sorry for my bad english ! smile.gif
