  1. My favorite vehicle has always been the Jagdpanther, but I have lately been hooked on Q.B.'s with Allies defending, and I discovered the M51Stuart: three mg.'s and a wicked little 37mm main. On the last one I played it took out two Stug III's and a Puma (?I think--the light wheeled tank with a 75) , plus a whack of half-tracks. Scrappy, effective, cheap, and accurate. My Hellcats always become smoking pyres and rarely finish one for one.
  2. Screeny, I dig your "sig". I had to memorize that very Ode this year for a course I am taking. ... So, according to your post, the Jagdpanther might be considered gamey? That is too bad because I usually get one for QBs, although they aren't great against infantry. How exactly does advancing troops up the flank count as gamey? Is it because they have one less side to be seen from...? Thanks for the link.
  3. I have had CMBO for awhile, but I play against one or two friends exclusively or just against the AI. So, what exactly are "gamey" tactics, and how are they circumvented by CMBB? I am going to buy it anyways so no need to convince me whether it is worth it. With quick battles it is more obvious (such as casual use of weapons historically commonly unavailable) --but what about scenarios with preselected forces? I promise I will not use this knowledge to my advantage.
  4. Sorry to bore you all with an old scenario, but I've been having trouble with this one. I win easily as the Germans equal strength, but as the Canadians I get consistently trashed. Well, a minor victory is the best I can manage with zero fog of war, heh-heh. I usually split my flame-tanks, one for each pillbox and then send my men and other tanks up the middle quick. When I am on the receiving end of fireflys they'll eat a few of my own, but mine seem to be bloody useless on the offence. Any suggestions besides extreme flanking manouvers? BTW excellent scenario, I love playing this one.
  5. This is one of my favorite scenarios, many thanks to whoever created it, too lazy to find out. However, I can't seem to manage better than a "draw" (as Allied). I send my tanks in cautiously up the middle and on the right flank, and I have taken to dividing the Veteran troops and sending them up the murderous left ridge with the better officers, while swarming the upper right ridge with the remainder. My engineers just get wasted. I "walk" artillery across the rear area but never seem to get both big guns (i.e. the 88 and 150mm inf.). Besides, if I shoot my tanks around right and hook them left, the well situated 50mm wastes them anyways. I'll get two flags with tons of casualties and one or two tanks left. The Stug usually does not present a problem. Any advice for this stonewalled Canadian? p.s. Any scenarios resembling this one...? I am a sucker for punishment. 6. collectively: "hey, Cookie! use your eyes, dummy!" All right, change french to russian and make it vodka. Oops. Mmm, vodka. p.s. if I change "vodka" to "Absolut" do ya think I'll get a royalty?
  7. 1940's style French women serving me French wine after a hard fought battle in France. Did I mention they ought to speak French?
  8. I saved up for a month for this game - but while I was waiting I played that demo probably two dozen times on either side - I love it. Still go back to it when I am feeling nostalgic. I have never finished it without losing a Sherm. though. I always move my tanks to the high ground to the right, my infantry split into the woods and first row of houses (NOT the church), and then wait it out, and then mop up. Often lose a tank on the outskirts of the forest too (I get greedy). I love the carnage in this one but it took a few tries to learn patience.
  9. So in terms of its function, how does it rate in comparison to the crocodile, which it appears to be synonymous with? I don't know anything about their practical relative "worth" )i.e. purchase value) as up to now I have only played AI stuff. I treat croc's like "presents", I only use them for clean-up, otherwise they are always the first to be targeted. Off the top of your heads, what is a good scen. with an AVRE in it in which I could play the AI? Can't seem to find one.
  10. Yep, that's right. Just the one sound. I found the sound files but as you say they are grouped somewhow and don't seem accessible. Thanks for the info on the screenshots. Now I can start taking before/after pictures. Ah, carnage.
  11. Thanks for replying. Scott M. Blakely posted below asking how to take screenshots, and then replied to his own question saying he found it in the FAQ's. I couldn't find it myself and I was wondering if someone had a link. And, uh, this is going to sound absurd, but - any idea how I get to those files....?
  12. 1. Is there a mod/command which turns off the sound of burning stuff, i.e. tanks, buildings &c.? I play with headphones on so as not to disturb my dutifully studying wife and my ears are ringing by the end of every scen. There is a "sound-map" post which has numbers pertaining to each sound but I don't know how to implement them. 2. I know the question has been posted, but could someone kindly post a link to the answer to the screenshots question? I searched the board (including the otherwise very helpful "anthology..." post) but I am at a loss. Thanks folks. (I am on a Mac if that makes any difference)
  13. I don't speak with a wealth of experience, but I do know an 81mm mortar is basically useless against a dug in enemy (esp. pillboxes &c.), unless it is a spotter who I think has more rounds avail. They work like most artillery better against lesser experienced infantry or in tree cover. I would guess it is generally best used either as you say for smoke cover or in reserve for any infantry counterattack if it should happen, i.e. if you are playing an engagement rather than all-out assault.
  14. I lost an open top Priest when a German CO (all by his "shaken" lonesome) lobbed a hand grenade into it point blank in some nasty house-to-house. Ouch. I think he was "crack" status.
  15. I am new to the game and forum, so I apologize if this topic has previously been addressed. To wit: a bunch of my Tigers were trashed by Pershings with Tungsten AP's (at least I assume that is what "tung" means - now the weapon of choice of MBT's)). Why the hades didn't the oh so ingenious Germans adopt this technology? Or did they?(I know it was late in the war, but then again, so was the Me262, plus Fireflies had them and I think they predate the Pershing). Imagine a king tiger with tungsten.... Also, is there any better tactic against tung-equipped fireflies and pershings besides duking it out, or slinking around on the flanks...? token graemlin:
  16. I posted a dumb question a couple of weeks back, to which someone kindly replied to, which I found very helpful (re: graphics card patches). Just thought I would do the courteous thing and say thanks. Sorry I have forgotten who it was.
  17. I'm running the Mac version of this game on an iMac 400DV. The info box (i.e. "select unit, hit return" feature) comes up blank. Apparently I have an "ATY, Rage 128Pro" video card (the spec's name, not mine) if that helps. Any suggestions? Also, sometimes the turns load very slow - should I just get a new video card...more RAM (have 64mb currently)? Thanks in advance folks.
