    Can do at least one turn/day. Prefs: me Axis, huge map, no custom rules. I've been out of the loop for a long while but used to be able to put in a fair showing.
  4. Thanks for the suggestion mate but the properties pop-up lacks a "compatibility" parameter (or something similar) for me to change. I have a copy of WinXP but it is not what is used in my workplace and I'm gun-shy of the conversion issues surrounding customising it to recognise my hardware/software etc. Certainly not going to do it just to trial a game demo.
  5. I get the same error: 0010: Error: Impossible to find POL. 1 Some .dll in BIN folder is missing. 2 Re-install the game. 3 Wrong path. I suspect it is because I run my machine with Windows98. Is there no-way to run this demo with Windows98?
  6. Thanks mate. This sounds a likely cure as I am using a download manager, and I did expect the file to be self extracting. SO will have another bash.
  7. Because the last (v1.02) patch is bad I want to install the previous so I can play a PBEM game. I downloaded a file called "CMAK_v101_Patch" from Download.com What do I do now? Double clicking on the above file to try launch it from File Manager only prompts it to ask what application to launch it with.
  8. I've been away from the CM community for a long while and hence would appreciate anyone directing me to a profitable discussion of the pros and cons of these things. My quick appreciation runs thus: mortars are for neutralising AT guns. Mortar HTs gain mobilility and ammo load, but are unacceptably vulnerable to direct fire guns because they cannot use an officer as a spotter.
  9. I have only just returned to CM .... took delivery of CMBB & CMAK a week ago. & a couple of old gripes are making themselves felt already. The first is my inability to plant locational markers/flags on the map for future reference ie. after I've scrolled around the map at level1 and sussed out a few key points or hull down positions it is hard to locate them thereafter from level4/5 and in the fluster of play. Secondly, although this is not as bad a problem as in CMBO, the inability to set tactical "posture" of squads whether it be withdraw on contact, up to save the last cartridge for yourself. It appears though that the AI has been tweaked to make squads more gun-shy and rational, which in part meets the need. Or perhaps these things are available & someone can save me having to figure them out for myself?
  10. I have just tried (& was loosing when my pc crashed) an attack against a +75% reinforced Axis AI. So, as well as considering the nuances of this new game engine (seemingly increased effect of side arms & light mortars?) I did a little reading. Below is an excellent site: http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/Gallery/crete/day6.htm Coincidentally my own thinking was tending towards the way the Kiwi's did it in real life too (company columns either side of road behind the tanks). A fair testament to the verisimilitude of the game's mechanism in teaching tactics. I like Kingfish's pincer move but am worried about time/ammo running out, wholly aside from men getting lost & bushwhacked.

  13. CMBB (which I haven't bought yet) has this ja? Does anyone know which .bmp file so that I may copy it across to my (much modded) CMBO? Is there a comprehensive list anywhere of .bmp files with short descriptions of what they are?

  17. When I insert CD into machine it rattles and scrapes alarmingly and my file manager (Exploring) cant read it. When I try to launch the game I am told "No CDROM Detected". However pc reads other CDs fine. No I dont always place the CD back in it's wrapper each time I take it out of the pc. My question is: are their any reliable ways of repairing the damage I appear to have done? I have seen "CD repair kits" at my local K-mart which appear to involve polishing the reflective surface with some gel or solution.   18. I have just played a scenario which highlighted an aspect of CMBO which I'm sure I've been frustrated by before but filed away/lost in the stress of the moment. Guns (either towed/AFV) will not fire on burning buildings. So that if you are attempting to clear kill zones you are OK if you can level an unoccupied building using HE but if it should catch fire, then while the gun will accept the target order it will not fire. And a burning building is (I believe on limited evidence) a more significant LOS impediment than an undamaged one. This is not a bitch; I genuinely wish to know if there is a work-around or if I am coming at the problem arsey-versey.
  19. I have been intrigued by this matter since playing the 2nd demo game (in a v.steep sided long valley) then watching some yank shelling of filthy arab holes in Afghanistan. My trigonometry is a bit rusty, and given the mizzle velocities of these projectiles at CM ranges<1km the only possible explanation I can posit for the time of flight is air-resistance. I have observational evidence for this in-game, but not for shell-drop. At <1kn the gun elevation on these monsters is 2-3degrees. {Their absolute range was 20-25km}. Would appreciate some help.

  22. Sorry to impugn your code. Upon checking with opponent who setup the QB it turns out that only partial FOW is enabled. Mea Culpa.

I am involved in a PBEM game & when I have spotted my opponents units I can select them & see all the information he can ie.ammo, status, pause time etc. I'm sure I've had this happen before but I just ignored it then.   24. Your help was not only prompt but correct (nearly), thanks very much. I downloaded the latest S3 drivers ... no luck. I downgraded Hardware accleration one notch ... no luck. Two notches & 1 reboot later CM made me accept 640*480 pixels and BINGO - coloured lines. The reduced pixelation doesn't seem to be a problem and the map scrolling is a bit clunky, but I've got an added source of info. Everything was exactly where you said it would be with your estimation of utility accurate as well. Outstanding.
  25. pc system using Windows 98 with an old video card called: S3 ViRGE-DX/PX PCI (375/385) and the driver files are those which came with the windows 98 CD and loaded by the plug & play: S3v.DRV and S3.VXD DirectX version 8.1
