    Oh god.

    Ever heard about statistics?

  2. I feel your pain.

I already lost my HD's contents three times.

Once all the music and audio data, almost all compositions i've made over eight years were gone and the second time, i lost my diploma-thesis, that was around 80% finished...

I had been in CERN for three months for that project and all the data i collected (some expensive experiments) were gone.

I wish you all the best, that the data can be recovered, but if not, you've learned a lot...

    Think positive.

It's not your life you've lost. Only a part of it. ;)

  3. @Michael Dorosh:

Dorosh, your style of discussion with personal insulting, provoking, denouncing and even spreading lies about others if they share another opinion may show certain aspects of your character, but isn't really good for the climate in a forum.

I don't know, how many you've already expelled from this forum with your attitude, but i guess it must be enough.

It's possible that someone hasn't received a good education in his parental-home, but what i don't understand is, that the moderators in here allow such an uncivilized behaviour.

Skorzeny's book was written after the war.

I have the original interview in which Skorzeny describes the operation on a LP...

    The reality...

    Have you been there?

Major Moys comanded the parachute (replacement school or replacement unit... can't remember which) that was tapped by Student for the operation. They planned and executed it. Skorzeny, against the protests of the Fallschirmjäger, went along on the mission.

Do they mention, that it was Skorzeny, who had full responsibility?

Do they mention, he was liable with his own life, to recue the Duce?

Do they mention, that he had free hands for that operation?

And do they mention, that therefore he chose his men?

I don't know, what the intention of the story is, you want to tell: that not SKorzeny alone flew on Monte Cassino, fetched the Duce and flew back?

    It's ridiculous.

    Ofcourse his men helped him.

And why not with the planning, too?

The intention of your description seems to me, that Skorzeny earned the laurels, while doing nothing and even being an incapable coward.

Could it be, that the author was quite frustrated about the fact, that Skorzeny earned the fame, while he stood only in the second row?

Understandable to a certain degree, but whenever we talk about war, it's the single soldier without a name, making the success of the big names possible.

To me, your description has a bad taste: not only that Skorzeny, undoubtedly a unique brave and successful soldier, is put into a bad light, it also suggests, that the men he chose weren't proud of the honor, that they had been selected for such a unique commando.

  5. I would really like to know, how German Fallschirmjäger were able to take Crete from the dug in Brits away.

    Operation pls!

I would also like to play Obersturmbannführer Otto Skorzeny's liberation of the Duce, but have no idea, how it could be transferred into a CM-scenario, without Gliders and civilians...

I'm also very interested, how Rommel achieved his success in North Africa on the tactical level and last but not least,

the defending of Italy against total Alliied air-superiority.

  6. Thanks for that great utility! smile.gif

I think here in the CMBB-forum it will have more attention, than in the tips'n tricks section (i never look there).

And it deserves all the attention that's possible for such a great tool. ;)

    2 suggestions:

    1.

What about the possibility of a preview picture how the mod will look like?

Wouldn't it be possible, that MCMMM looks into the ZIP-achives, if there is a McMMM.bmp?

If yes, then this is the preview.

    Very easy for mod-authors.

If you want to allow for more than one preview pic, the McMMM.bmps could be simply named as McMMMx.bmp.

    2.

To make organizing easier, it would be cool, if McMMM could look into existing subdirectories in the MOD-directory and displays that structure.

So everyone could make his own organization.

VERY cool program and with a few enhancements, it could even top CMMOS, with much less labour for the modders and easier to set up and understand.

    Thanks again. smile.gif

  7. IF i may give you a tip:

never believe in companies and their promises.

Because i bought a card a few days ago, i informed myself a bit and there is an interesting rumor:

the company making HalfLife2 made an auction between ATI and nVidia. ATI payed more...

I don't know if that is true, or a lie.

What counts is, that it would make sense.

If you want a good card for HL2, wait until HL2 is out a few weeks.

If you want to be future-proof for DX9 games, wait for the next GPU generation. The current GPUs are too slow anyway.

  8. I cannot agree in the case of CM.

One of CM's biggest problems is, that it's unknown.

It's a well known practice from companies, fighting officially against piracy, while tolerating it, due to certain reasons (i.e. Microsofts ridiculous copyprotection):

    1. it helps spreading the product - compared to extremely expensive marketing it's even for free - especially for small unknown companies with unknown products

    2. people using cracked complex and very good software, usually buy it after some time - if you're passionate wargamer, you want CM's manual.

    3. people collecting cracked software, wouldn't buy the software anyway - having no cracked version, wouldn't force them to buy it

    4. market segmentation - it's a misbelieve, that a copy protectin scheme is successful only, if it can't be cracked. I.e. it could make total sense, to prevent the normal user from private copying and spreading the burnt CDs, while allowing the software to be spread over other channels.

Otherwise, how can it be explained, that BTS' CMBB version came out with an old, already cracked Safedisc-version, while CDV, a big publisher, already present in all big stores in Germany, uses an uncracked version?

As the replies in this thread proove, available warezed versions do not necessarily mean, that people don't buy the software.

Usually people buy for things freely, if the price is ok.

And for CM the price is extremely fair compared to what you get.

It's not that simple, that every warezed version means one less sold legal version.

I don't want to be understood as supporting using cracked software.

I just want to show some aspects, that are usually withheld or made to a taboo.

Especially in the case of the almost unknown game Combat Mission, from the unknown small company BigTime Software, i would say, that the damage to the company due to being unknown, is much higher, than cracked versions of their product could ever create.

If everyone knows your product, THEN it makes sense, to protect it from being spread.

But if no one knows it, the oposite can be right.

CM's WEGO system has the potential, to blow big parts of the ridiculous RTS genre away, if the people would simply know, how unrealistically RTS is (compared to the genius WEGO system).

Who doesn't know the question of young potential wargamers if you suggest CM to them: 'Is it a RTS game?'

Fact is, the average player doesn't know what WEGO means. And if he has heard about it in a review, he still knows nothing: you need to have played CM, to discover it's ingenuity.

    Like Andreas already said:

It is all about incentives to stop pirating.

  9. Yesterday i bought the MSI FX5600 VTDR, because i couldn't stand anymore the lack of fog with my Radeon8500LE (Connect3D).

I had bought it for CMBB only and replaced a TNT2Ultra with it.

First i had to notice, my computer didn't boot with the Radeon - the frightened 4 times beeper - initialization failed.

After several days of searching on the net, i found an interesting article: it mentioned, that not the PSU has to be it, but it could be a voltage breakdon on the VIA motherboard.

I followed the instructions, soldered directly a cable with a switcher from the power supply +3V (IIRC) to the mentioned transistor on the mobo and prayed, that it will help.

    And it helped!

So this time i was a bit afraid, that this time, my PSU (300W) would be really to weak for the FX5600.

I installed the card, switched on the computer and couldn't believe it, that the computer booted without the additional voltage-supply being connected.

Until now, i booted around 20 times and didn't need it once.

So the Radeon8500LE already needed more current on initialisation, than a FX5600!

And finally FOG FOG FOG! CM looks fantastic with fog again (since my TNT2 days)! I'm really happy about that like a child at christmas.

The 2d picture quality of the FX5600 is really excellent, too and a big improvement compared to the Radeon8500, which already makes a very good 2d picture.

I decided for the 5600 because the 5200 would have been slower than the 8500LE and the performance with anisotropic filtering and anti-aliasing seems much better than with a Ti4200 (otherwise i would have gone with a Ti4200).

Now i run CM with 4 times AA and 8 times AF without any performance problems and it simply looks fantastic.

Another point for me to choose a MSI VTDR was that it's almost silent: 28dB!

This card is also mentioned in a few revies as a good overclocker - haven't tried it yet, 'cause it's fast enough for CM anyway.

Another positive argument to decide for the slightly higher priced MSI VTDR was it's infrared remote control: the infrared receiving-diode is on a quite long cable (~1m) and therefore i hope (if the software does what i expect), to be able to control the computer from the next room (with a hole in the wall).

If it is of interest for some of you: the card comes with full versions of Ghost Recon, Morrowind and Duke Nukem Manhattan Project.

The other 7 included games are demos only.

5 other CDs with programs are included, too.

It's TV-out is also mentioned in some reviews as very good (S-VHS to S-VHS cable included), although i haven't tested it yet.

I also don't really need it, because i have a standalone DVD, but the remote control in conjunction with MSI's Media Center software, really seems worth to give it a try: controlling the music or DVDs from the next room in front of the TV or recording via the card's VideoIn, without the need to be at the PC.

I was a bit sceptical, due to the bad press nVidia has nowadays, but if you want fog and speed with AntiAliasing and AF on for CM (and who doesn't), there's nothing better for CM than the new GF5600 upwards.

Now it seems to me, the press and the big reviewers are doing everything, to make a hysteria against the new GF5. Forget about that, if you need a good card for CM!

No one is mentioning ATI's table fog problem or the needed high current at initialization.

I also didn't want to wait any longer, 'cause CM is my main game (every other game has turned into peanuts for children) and when CMx will come out, then i will have used the 5600 for a decent time to make an upgrade again - maybe.

    AMD TB 1.4@1.53

    Via KT133A

    512 MB

    325W PSU

    DualBoot Win98SE(CombatMission) / XP(music only)

    Update (21.09.03):

Today i found some time, to take a look at the software, that's included.

    InterVideo's WinProducer v2.0 FullVersion

and InterVideo's WinCoder -> MPeg4, DivX support

A lot of special effects and filters.

Seem's to be very easy, to make DVDs with menus with it.

Another CD contains InterVideo's DVD Player WinDVD 5.1 channel.

In the meanwhile i tested the TV-out: much better than from the Radeon8500. Very good.

  10. Today i found some time, to continue with my first TCR-battle and was surprised once again:

until now, i always became annoyed, when i saw the AI storming against MG positions, knowing from GOD's view, they are without any chance.

With TCRs things look completely different!

Within the trenches and much less knowledge, how many enemy squads are still to come, you don't know what will happen and pray the position will hold.

    It's much less predictive!

    Highly recommended.

Although 2x seems to low for handhelds to me (hey, even i own a 7x50), i makes total sense for gameplay.

I use 2x zoom only for units with handheld binoculars, too. But except tanks:

In addition, there are these optics, that can be used in the direction of turret/hull facing.

    Here we have a dissence:

although it's unrealistically, i really love to use the right zoom factor even when looking around with the tank commander.

CM doesn't allow rotating the turret for searching the horizon.

So i'd like to use the correct zoom factor not only in the turrets direction.

It could be also understood a bit of compensation, that the game on the monitor is only 2D, and not 3d like in reality.

I also won't miss anymore to move with the tank and look through the zoom, slowly rotating the view and watch with a shaking camera how the infantry advances.

Feels like being within the action.

Would that be ok for you?

  12. Thanks for the offer 86smopuim, but first i have to practice a bit and the true combat rules seem a bit hard for me, 'cause at the moment i'm learning not to lose orientation even with moving on the map.

It's all new and exciting to me and i have to learn a lot first.

Today i ordered a Geforce and the Radeon will fly out of the computer!

Can't wait to play that rules with fog! smile.gif

Feel free to contact me in two weeks, if you still want to play then.
