1. Splash (G) 51 vs Pfc Dunsel (F) 49 I must say I like meeting engagements - you figure out quickly what is yours and what is theirs and what you could get with some finesse. The instructions were explicit in that I was ordered to halt the French advance and if possible give them a "bloody nose". I received a Reg. Rifle Co. but the bonus layout was such that they were rather slow and lacked close assault fire power -- further the map was open and there were no smoke rounds except for 8 between my 2 mortars. Any kind of attack seemed out of the question but the materials fit the orders to a T. In some sense this game resembled an operation in that the score in the previous game was a factor to be considered in this game. I tried to visualize the French orders and thought they would have to be more aggressive (it's Normandy after all) than mine and therefore was more substantial than my forces in both quality of troops and type of support weapons. I just knew he would have the equivalent in Hounds as I in Pumas and an HE comparison would again lead towards more substantial infantry. Further, I love those wee Greyhounds and was very nervous of them - beady little guns on a fast turret. If I could hit his troops with my Pumas that would be good but getting thru the Hounds would be hard and when 12 Pumas showed up it became impossible (12 hounds after all). It was pretty clear to me where the French would be starting from so I was aggressive in starting out and went all out to claim the hill that lies on the German side of the middle of the map with the lone house sitting on the further side. I kept to my side when on defense. The brief said I would be receiving more Pumas - I figured 2 in a bit and 2 later on. By the end I felt like an air traffic controller on a bad day. By turn 7 I had my squads laid out across the said hill 4 AC's also spread out on the hill and the remaining 4 on overwatch in back. At turn 8 the suspense was killing me so I sent a half squad over the hill top on the left side and snuck my sole Vet squad up into the trees that bisected the middle of the hill at its top. It was a golden moment - a mess of Hounds (5) were moving out down below with a lone hound sitting out in the open on overwatch - 2 uncounted. I regret to say I did not believe my eyes and felt for sure the other 2 were hull down on the embankment waiting for my snout to show. On the other hand it was an opportunity and I had to commit to "the bloody nose"part of my orders. I did a hunt then reverse type maneuver and it went fairly well in that I popped 2 hounds (they didn't stand a chance) but if I had just left my Pumas to hunt and not reverse another 2 would have been cooked because his back up wasn't where I thought. Further a zook team of his (green alas) was making a run and I area fired into the trees where he had hid and it came up toast - the half squad I had sent over never made it back but the Vets were well hidden and had a perfect view of his left forward flank. This was all over by turn 11 and after this I waffled around for 6 moves. I went into a complete hull down on everyone and Pfc Dunsel began to chip away at me. I don't think I did anything badly but the jump was with Dunsel and he played the sequences better. I must admit I had myself convinced he had to attack (18 pts. short on BB) so I wanted to hurt him that way and that way only. I tried a fancy schmancy move at the end (against explicit orders!) - I was mad at myself for being so cowardly -- so I snuck my forward Pumas back to the rear and brought all guns to bear for the very last move. I wasn't entirely hopeful (those slow turrets) but I knew I'd have more barrels and a more cohesive grid. It turned revenue neutral in that he bagged one and I bagged one. Thanx Ted for the great time and a clean slate. Your force selection is always an instruction it itself. Dave H I will give you all the HE's I have in my arsenal when your ready.
 2. Seeing as I'm in the newbie tournament I figure I get to ask a newbie questions anywhere I want. BTS member number #42-- who is member #1? Let alone #12? brightly!

What say the final winner is beholden to fight Vadr if he so wishes. Roll on, roll on....
 5. It's a bump. It's a bump! I'll hand out cigars later

Tell him he must complete the first 100 turns in the next four weeks. That should distract him from the tournament a little.

Oh I'm a busy little beaver -- sharping my teeth, mating beneath the ice in our barked dome (you know they do that now don't you). Dreaming of grand trees to be felled and little saplings as trophies for the offspring. Runting on bada BUMP!

The problem is what you see is not what you get. You can see where to withdraw to but Jack Smack can't see for turds - so reformulating a new withdraw would fall under the command structure ordering a withdrawal to this new point. What would be required is a reset function that you could incorporate. How's that? It would be something like the (I forget the name) crowning (my mind!)? in chess. Moving the king to the full interior of whatever side and the rook out - you know what I mean? He adds plantively.

Your subject line seems to have been too much for us Canucks. I quickly clicked on it to find out about the Northwest Territories as well......mostly because I live in the NWT and long ago had decided I must be the only CM Player up here. Any of the uberFinns out there live above 60 degrees north or am I the most northerly CM Player?

You must be the man, Jonah. Sorry Jack - but this part is important!

 12.
quote:
Originally posted by Bullethead: Good point. But to do it, you'd have to be careful so as not to give away too much FOW. Using your example, after the tank disappears on the left you have a "last seen here" marker. This marker instantly goes away the moment the tank reappears on the right. If the game was changed so the tank again gave a sound contact before appearing on the right, I assume the "last seen" marker would disappear then as well. And I know many players would notice this--I sure look for the disappearance of markers as "new" units appear, as I try to figure out what the enemy has. Thus, when the new sound contact showed up on the right, the player would immediately know that tank is no longer lurking in ambush on his left and be able to act accordingly. So if this is going to be changed, IMHO it would have to be done like this: 1. Tank approaching on the left makes sound contact. 2. Tank appears on left. 3. Tank retreats on left, leaving "last seen here" marker. 4. Tank makes sound contact as it retreats from left flank, causing "last seen here" marker to vanish. If you could hear the tank coming, you can hear it going away.

Sorry to cut the quote short but if you wanted this to work you have to have the possibility of hearing more tanks then there actually are. i.e. after the tank has moved away and you begin to hear something from the opposite flank the other marker should remain until it is positively identified as the same tank.

OGSF I see how the map is and make the same map out of my bed covers and boxes for the houses. then i take those cute little soliders and vroom vroom tanks from my collection and set them up, eyeing the landscape made from a collection of dirty clothes and pillows and such i can find or sneek by the wife. when I figured out my set up I plan my attck.. moving my little guys but more so the tanks!!! sputtering "vroom vroom! and *bang pow!!" when they move and shoot. being sure I am planning the most devistating attack on my opponent I run quickly to the computer before the plan fades to thoughts of when i should eat or look for my marbles. setting up the battle exactly as it is on the bed I must move quick if the wife come to the bedroom and sees a mess and cleans it up or *gasp* moves my delicatly placed soldiers and vroom vroom tanks!!! I think she does not understand, one time I thought I planned my Tiger to skirt the pair of socks, er I mean the pair of houses on the left! supported by the gummie bears ( I ran out of Volksgrenadiers) and my wife moved some stuff to find "whites for the wash" damn her.. I made the mistake of taking my cool nifty guys and vroom vroom tank to the right of the socks.. er houses.. That was horrible!! Gummie bears slaughtered and my tiger got bushwacked by a tampon!!! (I ran out of US Bazookas) I try to get eye level with my bed battlefield to see maybe there is a chance to use my heavy hitters (jagdpathers, etc). you have to be very carefull crossing the Bras (bridges, my wife got upset I was using her Tampexes as bridges, but they look so cool realistic with those wings as a arched bridge.. anyhow crossing the bra you have to watch out for pennies (mines) set up right infront of it otherwise you have a problem, be sure to have some Pioniers attached to the tank to take care of those pennies, uh mines.. *whew* is it warm here... ya so like I said set up your battlefield at home with your Axis tanks and stuff, improvise. but word of warning don't use your wifes birth control pills as rough terrain.. they can be real moody about that stuff, even though I told her that they are perfect for my map since my armour can't drive through them it stops them like the little.. *cough* well I think you understand. I hope this helped you alot remember watch out for the tampons, the pennies and the wife if she catches you using her pills as rough terrain.

I found this very funny and thought it was worth quoting again but with the proviso: Don't do this at home boys. Sounds like Mensch's bed is truly a warzone. What ever happened to Mensch anyways?
 14.
quote:
Originally posted by Dave H: Splash, please read this closely because I'm sure our scenarios in the next round will be just exactly like Blind Man's Bluff.

Just to let you know I'm thinking of you Dave H What kind of nom de guerre is that by the by? 17. Soooo Ted, (I'm drawling to draw it out) When you get a chance (10 hour cycle) tell us all about round 2 -- like what's the names of the maps and any other tidbits you make think of in 20 hours or so... I'll wait....

 19.
quote:
Originally posted by SuperTed: More results from the SuperNewbies: Congratulations to Splash!

Thanx there Ted. After I acquired an early lead I went all fuzzy and warm or something - my whole team went into a snooze and Pfc Dunsel did some very fine chipping -- frustratingly so! But as it was a twoheader I figured it my obligation just to preserve the points I had. Besides so many beady little guns lurking beyond the crest really gave me the heeby geeby's. I figured what I couldn't see wouldn't hurt me. Thanx Pfc Dunsel for the very real excitement and I'll see you on the mound some time in the future.
