1. I think the difference may lie with using your hqs to spot for motors. If you use your hq to spot for motors maybe combat bonuses apply. With at guns your hq will not be spotting for them hence no accuracy bonus. Just an idea, really don't know.
2. Both books are a lot more german perspective than russian, but hey, there good books.
3. A couple of real good books on Eastern front are "With our Backs to Berlin" Tony le Tisser. It gives a soliders perspective on the the last days of Berlin. There are about 10 stories from germans on what it was like to defend germany from the "russian hordes" during the last weeks of the war. A simialr book "Gotterdammerung 1945" by Schneider is a broader look of the 6 months or so of the war on the eastern front. Both books I would recommend as engaging, more than just statistics and maps.
4. Thanks for the info Madmatt. I swear you guys think of everything. Leaves me with no oringnal ideas. LOL
5. I am talking about scenarios starting with 6 man squads instead of 9 or 2 squad platoons instead of 3. This would show the effects of a long defensive struggle by the germans. I would be surprise to find 3 squads full of 9 men each in a platoon defending in stalingrad/berlin/budapest. I just think reduced strength squads/platoon/companies add a little to the overall feeling to a scenario people create. Also, there are usually enough hqs because you can always promote someone to plt.leader
6. I understand that both sides had man power problems. I just find battles with full/perfectly filled TOE kind of bland. When you play scenarios where the defenders and attackers have a full company or two it does not give any feeling that this battle is a part of a bigger war and makes it feel like a QB.
7. Before band of brothers start up i would like to make a suggestion to all those scenario designers out there. I hope when cm2 comes out scenario designers take into account german attrition during wwII. Any battle on the eastern front after 43 had german unit way understrength. Companies with less then 60 men before combat is not very uncommon. Battalions with about 2 companies the norm more so than 4 full strength ones. I think having your german units understrength, in you scenarios, would add a little bit of the desperate situation the germans were facing after 1943. Just a suggestion.
8. I am looking for a large city operations. I already have utrechseweg which was very entertaining. Is there any more out there? Scenarios are fine too. Thanks
9. I posted this on tips and tricks and didn't get much response so I am asking this question here. I am asking about the benefits of company and battaliion hq. Am I missing something but I don't use company+ hqs for much. I use them as a spotter for on board morters and as a substitute platoon hq if they happened to get knocked out. But i can not find much else to use them for. I rarely play battles that are big enough for battalion hqs but when I do I don't have anything for them to do. I usually just place company/battalion HQs out of harms way so they don't get waxed. I am missing out on there benefits or not?
10. Besides using these hqs as forward observers for morters how else are they useful in gameplay. I sometimes use company hqs as replacement platoon hqs if they get knocked out. But besides that, i usually just place them out of harms way. Is there any other uses.
11. Sounds good. I will loved to give this scenario a spin. Shoot it over to coopermichael1@qwest.net. Thanks.
12. one other odd thing about artillery is why it takes longer to target something you can't see. If you don't have a los you shouldn't be as accurate but it still should take the same amount of time. Maybe you would have to shot a few more spotting rounds but hey it shouldn't take long.
13. Also, if your 2 man fo unit happened to be koed, you wouldn't lose the support of those off board guns.
14. Let me explain. Your platoon is over a small hill an is able to spot a large number of germans. the lt. in the platoon HQ should be able to call a artillery stike on them. You shouldn't be dependent upon the 2 man fo squad. the platoon HQ should act as the fo.
15. During WWII the germans were impressed by one area of army the amis had, the artillery. Any second lt. with a radio could call down artillery strike with any guns in range. Now shouldn't the amis be able to purchase these off-board guns or morters and the platoon and company HQs be able to act as the fo.
16. they relied on concelment to be able to get multipe shots before the enemy could determine their location. This is one point where cmbo falls short. Snipers should be able to get off 2-3 shots before the enemy locates their position. They way it is now, once your sniper shots he is open to attack from any enemy unit in los.
17. he was only station at the hill for a little while. the used him as a blocking force for marine patrols. Most of his kills on this hill came at less than 1000 yards. he did make a few long range kills here 1500+. The lore with hathcock comes with his ability to hide and hunt viet cong patrols. Both him and his partner usually operated in the jungle and engaged patrols at less than 600 meters.
18. oh yea, he didn't make to many of them he was mainly flushing them out for a patrol.
19. Carlos Hathcock was on a hill at Duc Pho when he made a 2500 yard kill.He shot a member of the viet cong with a 50 caliber machine gun. the heavy bullet allows for accuracy well beyond 2000 yards. And the cyclic rate is also slow enough for single shots to be fired. He pioneered the use of this weapon as a sniper platform.
20.
quote:
Originally posted by aka_tom_w: I think the the fluke like nature of getting a hit is modeled very well in CM when it comes to the accuracy of these weapons. -tom w[/QB]

it wasn't a fluke of nature for panzershreck, zooka,or piat to hit at ranges of 80m or less. thats why tanks were suicidal to proceed with out infantry support. Ask Grabner who was the ill fated ss officer that led the charge across the arnhem brige lossing 12 vehicles to piats. Oh yea you can't because he got zapped.
21. thanks fellas for a little insight and advice. The few tcp/ip games i have played it seems that my infantry take a high amount of artillery casualities. It always seems to break up an attack from the jump off position or a defensive flank.
22. When the enemy doesn't know you are there there isn't the pressure of oncoming fire to throw of your units aim/ability to see. There were germany anti tank company equip with just panzerfausts and screcks that scored more than 100 kills. The only way i can see doing this is making your first shot or two count. Because once you open fire you are going to have that units attention. If the Afv is disabled you probably wiil
23. While I am highly impressed by the realism in CMBO I think it lacks a aiming command. How many times have you set up an ambush for an AFV and your panzerschreck(bazooka, piat) has missed the AFV. I am not talking about charging into a firefight with your bazooka in hand to take out a AFV. I'm talking about a well hidden anti-tank team that reveals it self with it's first shot. ex. (In a recent tcp my sherman was engaged with a stug III. my enemy had a hidden panzerschreck in some woods to the sherman's flank. that panzershreck missed 4 side shot at a range of 60-70m) Even a medium ranges they seem to missed alot and then become the focus of attenion for the AFV and any infantry support. They usually are eliminated or pinned before they get off their third shot (which how many shots it seems take for them to find the range). Something I would like would be an aiming command. This command would allow your unit to raise its hit % while it stay hidden. So when you did pop your ambush it would make it count. Units in war aim if they have the time and are not under fire so why can't we.
24. When your enemy starts bringing artilley onto your infantry positions, is it better to leave them where they are(and wait it out) or should you run out of the target area. I usually leave them where they are, and hope and squad or two will not be routed to try and stop the infantry attack that follows the artillery strike.
25. Thanks a lot. I will have a little more enjoyment knocking out shermans now.
