No need to... I got the joke, was just wondering where in the evolutionary ladder I was sitting. Keep on sending them, Capt.

oh... well, you know, Darwinian, like in 'survival of the fittest', evolution ... hmmm.. nevermind

hmm.. did I miss the Darwinian part ?
Or are you implying that only the better fit newbies can make it to grunt ?

I feel that the improvements to the engine should be first to the AI, as the graphics do the job, and quite nicely, while the Tac AI has still some shortcomings.
So I hope BTS will spend more time tweaking the AI than trying to add tank tracks in the snow.

Off-topic, but do you have a source for these numbers ?
I remember reading in Shalamov the story of Russians (not from Vlassov's army) who surrendered during the war and escaped from the Germans only to be send to the gulag.
So, the fact that *some* were sent straight to the gulag seems well documented, if the number is not.

Maybe you could explain how the differences in strategy translated in the tactical approaches for each country ?
And did these differences persist to the end of the war, or did everyone adapt to the reality of the battlefield, and used more or less the same tactical doctrine in 45 ?

I know of a number of people who use the thin "alleys" between buildings as roads as that is a more realistic size.
20 x 20 meters is OK for a farmhouse, and can represent a small (about 4) cluster of houses for a village, I guess.
Regarding 'alleys', does this still allow tanks to pass through ?

Nice pictures.
It reminds me that the street that goes along the garden (rue de Rivoli) has a peculiar feature that can't be modelled in CM : covered walkways (I'm sure all tourists remember those).
They give overhead protection and plenty of pillars to hide behind, and they do not hinder mobility as buildings do. Maybe they could have been modelled as scattered trees.
-
The computations of LOS, 2nd floor etc. seem to indicate that the relation is 1-to-1, i.e each CM building is one building.
On the other hand, given the grid size and the size of your typical french village, I would say that each building is an abstraction for a block of houses.
So, what did BTS say ?

Absolutely, but since you can play more games in the same time, it evens out in the end...

Mmmm, may be french and latin people generally prefer to be with girls or women than playing like little children (my tank is better than yours, my father can beat your father and my country is the strongest
That said, we (i'm french too) *do* have a wargaming magazine (Vae victis) that you can find almost everywhere (far more circulation than Strategy and Tactics or Command).
I guess that France has less computer per capita than Anglo-Saxon or Nordic countries, and even less Internet access, that's why you might get the impression that french are under-represented here.

Strange that nobody mentioned :
"An intimate history of killing"
by Joanna Bourke, subtitled " face-toface killing in 20 th century warfare"
It's not a military history book, but it should interest all those who followed the thread.

[i did a quick search but...]
once again I turn to your collective wisdom :
reading this board, i noticed some accounts of duel of tanks vs AT guns.
I'm a bit surprised since my first reaction when meeting an AT gun is to withdraw my tanks. I was convinced than in such a duel the AT gun, who's lower and camouflaged, would always win.
Seting aside the cases where the AT gun is unable to penetrate the tank's armor, is it standard practice to use one or more tanks to engage AT guns ?
If it is in the game, is it historical, or a quirk due to the spotting rules ?

Thanks for the answers, guys.
So, if anything under a platoon is not worthy of the heavy artillery treatment, is it reasonable to buy some (heavy, that is)?
Judging from your answers it seems one would be better off picking up more 81 mm mortars : more flexible and less waste.
On the contrary, heavy arty seems a risky strategy : either you find a big target and hit hard, or you don't and waste it.

Hello all,
I'm a newbie, still learning the tricks of the game and I'd like to have a few tactical advises about what to target with artillery
(and yes I did a quick search).
For instance, I tend to use artillery to take out AT and INF guns, but I'm wondering whether I'm not wasting its potential.
Let's say you have a well-placed FO that can see at the same time :
1 - an open-top AFV
2 - a few dug-in squads
3 - an AT/INF gun
4 - houses near a VL
5 - another FO
What would you engage with that FO ?
I'd say 3-2-4 in that order, and wouldn't bother with 1 and 5. What do you think ?

Londoner, thats interesting, especially since i've just finished reading Bourke's book.
Could you clarify what you mean by "warrior ethics" ? It seems you equate this with willingness to kill, and your examples come mostly from young volunteers.
I would have thought that the "warrior code" was for professional soldiers, and included things such as protecting civilians, not killing an ennemy who surrenders, accepting sacrifice i.e. a good soldier (to come back to the subject of the thread) is not just a killer.
