  1. I remeber this game and was hoping it would get released. One of the hooks was that it was played out in real time and you could adjust army/division bounderies, supply ect. All that was about 2 or 3 years ago. Dug these up. The first one is rather interesting. http://www.gamesdomain.com/gdreview/zones/previews/mar99/rtmp.html this pic made me cry and wet myself at once! http://www.gamesdomain.com/gdreview/zones/previews/nov98/rtm09.jpg a forum thread http://www.wargamer.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=22&t=000010 http://gamesdomain.hol.gr/gdreview/zones/previews/nov98/rtm.html cute http://www.pisymbol.com/russian_road.htm [ December 06, 2002, 02:13 AM: Message edited by: GDS_STARFURY ]
  2. they are up for download, just click on the pic to get the zip file and thank you
  3. I ran across a wargaming clan site that, among other things, sells its own line of coffee mugs, thong underware, teddy bears, pull-over hodded parkas, watch caps, tile coasters and beer steins. Perhaps you should franchise.....
  4. Dump as much into Tech as u can. After that pick your preferance. At the higher difficulty settings playing vs the AI your on such a shoestring of MPP to begin with that you really need to reduce your units costs if you hope to survive. Jestre: I compeletly agree, its crack on a cd-rom!
  5. Thank you very much Ive put up a picture of the redone German units at http://www.geocities.com/gds_starfury/StratCom.html I still need to tweak the planes a bit more. The progression here is as follows: HQ, Corp, Army, Pz-2, Pz-3, Pz-4, Panther, King Tiger, Maus, Fw-190, Ta-154, He-280, Me-262, Me-1011, Ho-229, He-111, He-274, Ju-488, Ar-234, He-343, Ar-e555, Bismark, Schornhurst, Graf Spree, U-Boat, Transport
  6. Vs the AI I typically wait until that air group has launched a few strikes at Tripolitania and goes down in strength to 6 or 7. Then hit it with what you can and keep a corp handy to land. You can accelerate this by attacking another close allied unit with a airfleet and let Malta further reduce itself by intercepting.

  8. used to do some AAR for close combat, the scale of the game fits well to them. They can almost seem personal if you can remeber the names of your men. Another type of AAR that is fun but much rarer is the same game/different players blind AAR. This is were both ppl write the AAR without checking with the other person for referance. The differences you find can tell you a lot about whats in a persons head.
  9. Glad to be of service I gotta redo my links page to......amazing how things like site maintanence get forgotten. [ December 03, 2002, 10:06 PM: Message edited by: GDS_STARFURY ]
  10. The War in Russia HQ system worked fairly well. You could designate which formations belonged to what and if I recall correctly there is even a supply penalty when you change a units HQ. Also the way supply flows from the top to the bottom was modeled nicly.
  11. In reality a HQ had very little in the way of weaponry. Instead these units were tasked with running the war, ie: paperwork and supply. I dont recall any senior level command staff taking an active part in combat with possibly the sole exception of the final defence of Berlin and maybe when a offensive went so far as to massivly overrun a rear area. What the HQ unit in SC might need is a slightly better air defence value.
  12. More often then not those Italian losses were due more to Officer stupidity then the individual soldiers. Many German officers when commanding Italian troops gave them high praise. For a similar situation look at the opening of Barbarossa. I dont think anyone here can discredit the Russian soldiers bravery but the decisions from higher up doomed millions.
  13. Hey Andre long time no see. Glad to see a familiar face around here. Still doing the CC thing here. In fact got a mod for CC5 based on Kursk in the works. If ya want we can meet over in the cc3 zone lobby and get a game going. As a special treat heres a bit of what Ive got in store for SC. http://www.geocities.com/gds_starfury/StratCom.html just extract it to your bitmaps folder and overwrite the existing file. All medals are now accurate with respects to their main country. [ December 03, 2002, 02:12 PM: Message edited by: GDS_STARFURY ]
  14. Back in high school I had a taped copy of that movie. At 5:30 am every morning I awoke to the foor gunner explaining why he sat on his helmet, then the music starts, then Im outta bed and off on my day
  15. Coming from a long history of wargaming on computers I can assure you there is always a bug, flaw or dicrepancy that can be used to make any game unrealistic. The best way to work around this is to play ppl that you know, respect and trust. The wargaming community in general has a abundance of standup folks. I think this comes from the demographic backround of most wargamers. If your buddy stopped playing Civ because of excessive gaminess then tell him to buy this and you 2 can play a honorable game all you want
  16. Repolacing any sound in SC is incredibly easy. Id like to commend the programers for being smart enough to have left all these options hanging out in the wind so to speak. Look in the so8nd folder under the main SC directory. The file your looking to replace is called Intro.wav Personaly I already replaced this with Duel Of the Fates from Star Wars, a much better bit of music I think If you own games like the Talonsoft series you can go into those programs and pick and choose the best sound files to use and recompile them in the SC folder.
  17. if you do a websearch for UOSU or Ultima Online Screenshot Utility your problem will be solved. Basicly its a small free program that lets you take screenshots during any game or activity while your on the computer. You can adjust all the options for the quality of pics you want and select a none-used key for taking the shots. Cheers
  18. The real answer is: No Only had the game about a week or so. I generaly try to dig around as much as possible solo before going h2h with humans. No matter how good a person is those first few h2h games are always painful no matter what the game. Soon Ill be ready, I just have a few more things to work on.
  19. Well if we had a true global map to play on with all countries involved then invading America wouldnt be out of the question. Just go through Russia to Alaska
  20. I dont think that the US industry was any more advanced then the USSR at the outbreak of WW2. In fact in fields such as metalurgy Russia has been more advanced then the rest of the world for decades. The Soviets also made a very important choice early in the war. They decided to not focus on the next best thing, but to make as many of what was proven to work already. The best way to translate this in game is to redefine each countries starting research to more accuratly match history.
  21. Murks: if a German player is letting his ally get taken then their not being a very good player. First of all either France or Britian get the plunder for taking Italy which directly translates into units at the front during the next turn. Personally I like letting France take the plunder as I wont have to spend MPP on transporting. With Italy's units gone the whole south flank is now open and the conquering country get whatever MPP Italy's territories offered per turn. The naval situation with this strategy is also such that the entire Axis Med fleet can be annihilated in 1 turn. Once this is done the only ships that you should keep in the Med are the carries for support. The rest of your fleet, which could be as many as 9 ships, can move back to British waters or the French coast by the 9th turn. If things are going more or less as planned the ability of Germany to even think about Sealion is nil. Early in the game this lets the allies win the battle of attrition. England and France are now producing almost 3 times as many MPP per turn as Germany. The attrition level brings me to my second counter to your statement. If your buying 6 air fleets that early in the game, and the Allies are now out producing you in MPP, and your frontline units are now wareing down exactly how are you taking France. Keep in mind that only a total of 6 units are needed to take Italy. The total sum of Allied production can then go to France. With fog of war on a German player might not detect this shift of forces until its to late. A sharp Allied player can also declare war on the Low Countries to keep the MPP plunder from Germany. I understand that long term this is a very bad idea but this whole strategy is geared to a very early finish anyway. In fact I might go as far as to try declaring war on Denmark and Norway just to really put Germany on the short term shoe-string. What the Allies need most early war is time. Time to position, time to produce and ability to upset the timetable for Germany. If the Allies can deny the Axis those early victories theyve basicly won the war.
  22. I think French resistance could be modeled quite well with a 1 or 2 point unit. These partisans would only activate if certain triggers are set concerning the invasion of France. Perhaps a condition of 6 allied units landing in a turn. The french partisan unit itself wouldnt be anyting really usful but, it would be an annoyance for the Germans much as it was in real life. One thing I forgot to list witht he things Id like to see is map edit tool. Being able to layout your own custom map would add infinte replayability.
  23. Some things Id like to see in either a patch or SC2: The ability to have either true random or historic random options for countries. For Ireland to have a port. A map covering the world Or if there are expansion sets covering other theaters for these to be linkable so by the end of the series you could, in fact, play a global game. For the graphics to be changed to a TGA format. Its more flexible, gives sharper pictures and is easier to mod with. All partisans should remain active throughout the war. This includes Russian partisans if and when they surrender. Later in the war French partisans should appear. Polish units operated to England should remain free units the same as French units in Commonwealth territory. This is especilly true for the Polish air unit. The USA should get at least double the MPP per turn that it does. Research times should be slowed down. Some kind of gearing or index that relates your war material production and available manpower to each other. It makes no sense that Germany can produce a 200 armies.
  24. More often then not people seem preoccupied with a early war defence and do not take advantege of thier striking potential. The following strategy allows the allied player to defeat the axis by mid 43 and not loose France at all. At the start of Fall Weiss the allied player should take all available naval units and move them south into the Med. Take care to kill the 2 northern subs by England. All allied troops in a port should be put on transport and also sent to the Med as fast as possible. Take the 2 French armies that arnt in Maginot defenses and move them to the southernmost French port. On the 3rd turn youll be able to have the vast majority of your naval assest in the Med and have Rome surrounded with armies and corps in transports. The 2 French armies should also be put on transports and landed on either side of Rome once the invasion begins. While all that is being set up and the units put in their places the Allied player should be building as many Brit and French corps as they can. Form a hedgehog defense around Paris and transport the Brit corps to the mainland as fast as possible. As the Brits come ashore move them down the line to form a backbone to the Maginot and the eventual German attack. There will come a point were you know Italy is about to join the war. If this happens at the end of a Axis turn then your all set to invade Italy without suffering political reversals with the USA and Russia. If you think Italy win enter the war at the begining of the next Axis turn then preempt them by declaring war on Italy first and launching your invasion. The result of this attack completly effects the German drive into France. Done correctly, and by scouring every available unit at the start, the Allies can launch into Italy with 5 to 6 units early in the war. By bringing all of your naval units you can effectivly crush the Axis Med navy, use your carriers to ware down the Rome garrison and completly upset any German timetable. The French dont have to worry about their south flank as those Italian units are now marching back into Italy to defend their capital. By pre-placing your transports before war with Italy you can land in the mountains and use the terrain to your advantege during the Axis counterattack. Ive gone as far as to operate all air units to French Africa to back this attack. Success can knock Italy out of the war very early and give either France or Britian a huge boost in MPP resources. This also forces the Germans to divert effort from France into Italy. This allows more then enough time for France and England to pump out a huge number of corps. Between this defensive shield and a instant war on 2 fronts, Germany is stretched to thin to complete the dual tasks of take France and regain Italy. The economy for this strategy should ignore all research and focus on the production of corps and transporting them first to Italy and then back to the mainland. At some point its usually neccessary to reinforce the Italian group with 3 fresh corps. This should be no problem if you can act early and correctly gauge the situation. The political downside to this is that Russia and America do not enter the war until late 41 and more often in mid 42. This delay can be aggrevated if you also choose to attack the Low Countries first. This can be usful as it negates the available plunder for Germany. This stretches German resources on a 2 front war incredibly thin. I think the main difference in this strategy vs most Ive read is that its pro-active. Because of our collective sense of history we often fall into the pattern of early war defence while we take the semi-historic course of building up and then attacking. The main fault with this is that it gives your opponent, either human or AI, the initiative. This strategy takes the initiative back and lets the Allies dictate the early war. This in course lets the Allies win the war and all without France falling and without the help of Russia or America.
  25. Its amazing that when you want to do something bad enough you eventually find a way to do it. Such is the case with SC. During my search for the root problem I uncovered various other things that I thought would be useful for the community. First and foremost the 1.05 patch set the value of the DirectX in the .ini file to 1, after changing this back to 0 almost all of the problems went away. I urge ppl to check this file in their SC folder. The next thing that I uncovered were the limitations of the SC graphics enviornment. I started to redo all the unit, terrain and game icons using 16bit tga files which were then converted to BMP format. Very bad idea! While you can have millions of colors in a bitmap, SC evidently likes the 256 color limitation. Once I dialed the pallet back to 256 colors the rest of the lock up problems went away. So my advice here if your inclined to mod the game is to use the exact same pallet for all of your work.
