Hello gentlemen!
I have been absent from this community for quite a while. A lot has happened in my life, including the completion of my PhD and a change in workplace. Good for me, probably.
While visiting the board shortly today I noticed that the person running the newest ROW tournament did not have the binaries for the tournament scheduling and scoring system carrying my name. This is probably my fault, since I think that I was contacted about this in the past. However, I had completely forgotten the issue.
Now it is time to rectify my mistake. I have also decided to do a bit more in order to make sure that this never happens again: I will also provide the community with access to the source code of the system, so that basically anyone can compile the programs if needed.
From now on, the Nabla system is available from this page.
Enjoy the tournaments!

Yep, you're correct, bad choice of words on my behalf.
Merry Christmas!

Having dug up that same information - about the training of combat engineers - from the original sources during the research on Finnish TO&E, and having relayed it over to BFC, I can tell you thatOriginally posted by Keke:I remember a discussion here, where BFC claimed that because Finnish engineers were not used in combat role in the Finnish Army, they were not included in the game in the first place...
1. BFC knew that Finns had started to adopt a new doctrine
2. the decision to include combat engineers as small teams and not larger formations was deliberate.
You may want to see the link in my signature for additional information.

Kanonier Reichmann: I think the size of the AAR reward should be different for different sections. Perhaps this can be discussed before the start of the next RoW tournament.
Holien: Those who can't play teach scoring.
Cpl Carrot: Very nice AARs.
Sgt Abell: After watching TB shed blood, sweat and tears over earlier dropouts, I am very happy that we've come up with a reasonable solution to the problem.
-
Yes that is what the manual states for this ROW3 but what about ROW4Originally posted by StoneAge:</font><blockquote>quote:</font><hr />First, as the tournament manual states, only section winners go into the finals. Holien: it is not fair to compare the results of players in different sections against each other, since they have played against different people - comparisons are only fair inside each section. In fact, the output of the scoring system could be improved so that it would output each section separately; currently it only gives one single big list (which is a bit misleading, I agree).
As I see the nabla system, you are scored against all 36 times a scenario is played. Not just the 3 times your group played it.
so why not wild cards for next three highest
ie
The_Capt 0.52
Heavy_Drop 0.42
Jon_L 0.41
They have a higher final score than 4 of the finalists </font>
-
Another reason to implement AAR score calculations into the system as well.

Ummmm....I think you've just broken your resolution already!Originally posted by Kanonier Reichmann:</font><blockquote>quote:</font><hr />Originally posted by Nabla:

I edited away the warning that the results are still being cross-checked from my result post on previous page. As far as I know, the results found on previous page are the Nabla scores for this tournament (but AAR points are not included yet).
I also arranged the scores according to sections, so you can now see directly who is eligible for playoffs if the AAR points do not change the ordering. (I will never admit it publicly - because I'm a graduate CS student - but I did it by hand.)
-
A couple of issues.
First, as the tournament manual states, only section winners go into the finals. Holien: it is not fair to compare the results of players in different sections against each other, since they have played against different people - comparisons are only fair inside each section. In fact, the output of the scoring system could be improved so that it would output each section separately; currently it only gives one single big list (which is a bit misleading, I agree).
Second, these are not the final results, because points from the AARs are not included. It is up to Kingfish to include AAR points, and then pick up section winners.
Third, remember to check your battle results (the original CM scores) in that long list. Currently it seems like we have the right battle results there, but one never knows.

Kingfish,Originally posted by Michael Dorosh:I see that my score in the Christmas Battle has been added in, but for some reason, I have a score for RearGuard action.
I never finished that one.
Could you fix that one, and I'll run the scores again after that. It may even be that we'll have to wait until all players have checked their raw (battle) scores.
-
Then the scores of each scenario (players in alphabetical order, I admit that here too they should be sorted by score, but I won't change that tonight). I also added the medians and mean deviations for each scenario. Here asterisk (*) in front of a players name means that the player has been guilty of an unfinished game in this scenario.
BTW, you seem to have had very balanced scenarios.

Here you go, boys. This first post lists the Nabla scores of different players in the tournament (but note that AAR scores are not included). If the name of the player in the list begins with an asterisk (*), it means that he has been guilty in at least one unfinished game, and is not eligible for playoffs (not that this new rule makes any difference in this tournament, but still).
EDIT: the results are now grouped in sections.

Ok, the errors were fixed by Kingfish.
I will need to do some testing of the new features before this tournament can be scored. You should have the final results at the latest on Wednesday. By the way, as a teaser, I've already seen the end results, I just need to check that they're correct.
EDIT: In the meanwhile, I want you to check the battle results I am using as input to the program. Note that the Allied player is always listed first!

Now I've implemented the new features into the system: a Sunday well spent.
But there are more errors - of a different type - in the scoring file I've obtained from Kingfish. I'll try to sort it out with him.
Be patient, my friends.
-
Exactly.Originally posted by Kingfish:The missing scores were filled in with either a "G" or "I" tag as per his instructions. I'm assuming that the programing he is doing involves getting the Nabla system to recognize those tags as opposed to a regular score.
-
Ok, I've got the new results now, the ones in which all unfinished games should be included (with the guilty and innocent tags).
I've got a major ceremony (yes, that one) coming up in June, and I've got some arrangements to do during my spare time until Sunday. I'll start to program the solution on Sunday. The good thing is that I usually get addicted to programming once I start. The bad thing is that what I should really be doing, even on Sunday, is to be working on the introductory part of my thesis...

I don't remember the actual details of that tourney, but the results he posted were computed with the system we are using, so I don't think TB was using any special tricks.
EDIT: Hmm, but it is true that the scores in that thread are not a consistent set of scores either (I tried running the scores posted by TB in the scoring program). So maybe he did do the computations by hand, although I doubt it. If only my memory were not Swiss cheese I would remember the way it was handled...
It is of course possible to compute all the stuff by hand, and if any of you guys wants to do it, be my guest. All the necessary information is in the manual. I myself will eventually have to implement the unfinished battle feature into the system anyway, so I will direct my efforts there.
Regarding the new feature we are implementing now, it was initially suggested by Treeburst in an email he sent to me, and I believe that TB also wrote the tournament manual. So we are doing things the way TB would have done them, and are following tournament rules to the letter.

A couple of clarifications.
First, if you take a look at the the tournament manual (the first post in the first page of this thread), you will find a section titled "DROPOUTS, WITHDRAWALS, and MIAs". The way in which unfinished games are handled is explained there. Basically it says that whoever is the cause of the game not being finished will be the loser in that battle, regardless of whether he was winning or not in that game. In fact, determining who was winning or not requires knowledge of the balance of the game, for which you need to compute the median or some similar statistic.
So, the W, L or T tag is not determined by the situation in the battlefield, but by the situation in the email exchange, so to speak. Actually, I think that the W, L, and T tags (invented by me) are a bit misleading, so let me change them on the fly. Let's in fact use only two tags: G and I. Tag G means guilty, I means innocent. Now, a player gets a G if he has caused a game to go unfinished. If both players have been the cause, or it can not be determined who has been the cause, then both players get the G tag. If only one player has been the cause, then the other player gets an I tag. Ok?
Second, in its current form the system can not handle any unfinished games, in any form. What we are doing here is in fact an implementation of a new feature into the system - you'll be the first ones to enjoy this. It has become obvious that every tournament suffers from dropouts and unfinished games, so it is a very good thing that this new feature is implemented.

We're working on the problem.
In the long run it is a very good thing that the system will be augmented so that it can handle dropouts. But this takes a bit of additional programming to do, so you will just have to wait for a while.
Go out and enjoy the spring!

Hi again,
We seem to have some inconsistencies in the scores regarding the number of battles that have taken place in different scenarios. I will contact Kingfish via email, but it may take a while before we can sort this out.
-
Hello everyone!
I have the score files, sent to me by Kingfish, and I will process them this evening when I get back home. I will post the results here and also send them via email to Kingfish.

Ehem... A reply due a long time ago, but here goes anyway.
Since January, or something like that, I have devoted all of my spare free time to my other favorite hobby, fly fishing. Unfortunately I just don't have the time for CM any more, at least not for the time being.
When I was last visiting the board some time at the beginning of the year, Treeburst had just left the building, so to speak, because of the security leak in the RoW tournament. A quick search done a minute ago suggested that he has not come back.
Fortunately I noticed that RoW III is still running. It makes me very happy to see that the time and effort we put into the development of the system has not been washed down the drain.
I probably won't be visiting the board very frequently, but I can be contacted via email (see profile) at any time if necessary.
Have fun, and keep running those nail-biting tournaments!

See, that's what money does to people. Bored already.Originally posted by MasterGoodale:Well, I just showed like 10 of the pictures to an older guy I work with. He advises me that they are probably worth a lot of money after looking at them.

I don't know what to do
Seriously, find an expert. Someone here must know where to find one.

Hello everyone!
I am not sure how we ended up in this situation, but I read from tournament homepage that Kingfish does not have the Nabla system executables in his use.
To avoid situations like this I just created a homepage for Nabla system and added the precompiled binaries (DOS) and the source code there. See this thread for more information.
Sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused.
