It's across all titles while evading in close terrain. It's not apparent in BS/SF2 because things die fast. It's more apparent in BN. We tend to excuse troops rushing towards known enemy position in built-up areas. It's more flagrant in bocage and occurs  too often to chalk it up to a "war story" .

FI has such diverse content that you could overlook it there (aka good war story). I don't have FB or RT so YMWV.

    What defines "close terrain"?

Are there verified cases outside of bocage?

Really looking forward to this!  😀

One thing I have noticed is that there are more scenarios and campaigns that are only German against Soviet AI.  Will we be seeing more of Soviet vs German AI in Fire and Rubble?

It's typically easier to design a scenario with the AI on defense, and I think we'll see plenty of Russian attacks in this module.

Guys, I'm looking for a book, which seems to be extremely rare and very hard to find for a decent price. My wife happens to go to New York next week and she's willing to have a look for this book (The Kravchenko Case by Gary Kern). Can any of you recommend a good second hand bookshop in the centre of New York where this book might be found?

The best bookstore in NYC (new and used) is The Strand.  Your wife should check it out just because it's great.

Lots of independent used bookstores list and sell their wares through Amazon.  I see some absurdly priced ($900??) copies there, but also one for $60.

  4. Cobra seems like a special case of "Allied Blitzkrieg."  The whole point was to exploit air and artillery power to smash a fairly thin line and win great gains in terms of mileage.

I might be wrong, but I still have the sense that Russian tank-riding was commonly used in tactical assaults while Allied tank-riding was used for operational mobility.

  5. Hello All,

I just built a new PC, and I've managed to get all my CMx2 games installed.  I'm running Win 10 (as I was on my previous machine, which didn't have the below problem).

One odd thing, though, is that installation never created a Battlefront start menu folder with all of the associated games.  (It should have, as I went with the default choice during installation.)  Even stranger, right clicking on any of the game .exes (or on manually created shortcuts to them) gives me the "Pin to Start" option, but the items still never appear in my start menu.

I can run all the games by double-clicking on the .exe in the game folder just fine.  I just can't get them onto my start menu, where I'd like to see them.

Anyone have an idea what's going on here?

  6. I know fire isn't the CM engine's strongest feature, but it does exist.  Sometimes you'll see that a building's interior shows flames on the floor after it has taken damage.

What is the actual effect of these fiery floors?  Will units in them take damage?  Can my units enter them safely or not?  I would assume that they are off limits, but it's certainly possible to order units to dance on the coals.

    Any enlightenment?

  7. I know nothing of how they're actually used, but would that be done in combat?  (The behavior of the crew up top suggests that they're not worried about coming under fire.)

Slowly crawling through a wall like like (or, more likely, pushing it down into a rubble pile and then backing away for the dismounts to clamber over) seems like a good way to get RPG'd by whoever is on the other side.

In any case, yeah, CM doesn't yet model all potential vehicle behavior, most especially vehicles that might be used to clear mines and breach walls.

  8. Engine 4.0 is the latest.

Unfortunately, in the WW2 titles it introduced some issues around artillery and retreat behavior that seem unrealistic and unplayable.  (For example, even crack and elite units in cover will stand up and retreat under artillery fire.)

When people talk about the upcoming "4.0 patch," they're talking about a patch that will correct these issues in games already updated to the 4.0 engine.  So far, only CMSF2 is at that point.
