  1. Far be it from me to agree with Dorash, but I too would pay homage to Mr. Molek. He's done a lot for the CM community. And he's a good guy to boot. He's set out to become as good a player as he is a modder...and if that happens, look out Fionn! ;)

You'll get him next time, Gordon! After I whip your butt, that is. :D

  2. I'd recommend the AARs that Rob Hall (aka Tomcat) is posting on the Rugged Defense web site. They're based on the RD 2001 Tournament semifinal and final rounds...and besides, the first two include yours truly! :D A win and a loss, but both enjoyable and challenging games from which there is much to be learned. Enjoy.

PS: There are Forum threads about both of the AARs that have been posted so far.

  3. Hi Fionn.

Thanks for the nomination, but I'm afraid I'd have to decline even if there was room, because I helped playtest most of the scenarios that you fellahs soon will be whomping each other's asses on. ;)

So, best of luck to all of you. I'll be VERY interested to see how it goes. May the best man win!

Oh, and by the way, Winecape, that wine can't all go to the scenario designers...us testers are thirsty too! :D

  4. Runyan: I don't think I was all that reckless. I'd rather have my infantry assaulting while I'm blasting away at the buildings. Alhtough I probably could have done a better job of coordinating all the infantry units, my problem was, primarily, my inability to drop smoke to cover the ford crossing and to cover the units attacking up the middle so that they weren't being fired upon from multiple directions (especially from the platoon to the right of the village).

I also spent more time than I should have on the approach, and could have gained some more back if I had moved more quickly. I was being cautious, but probably unjustifiably so. I tend to agree with Fionn: A difficult mission, especially against a quality opponent like Me262, but not impossible.

  5. Runyan: I, too, would have liked more time, although I'm not sure it would have made much difference. I had to hurry my infantry a bit, and probably could have conserved my arty better, but the outcome really wasn't dependent on time. It really depended on the clash between Me262's massive infantry force and my combined arms. With some smoke (stupid omission on my part) and 155 mm arty in place of 120 mm mortars, I may have been able to make the assault successfully despite the time constraints.

Liqur: So, did I lose well? ;)

  6. PILGRIM: Just to add to what Rob said, and to answer your question--normally, I let sharpshooters find their own targets after I un-hide them. But in this instance, I ordered the sharpshooter to fire at the Panther, to be sure that's what he did.

I expected he would be spotted, being on top of the big hill, and I was right, but I didn't mind losing him once he capped the TC. I had other forces in my FSE that could provide recon, and the loss of a TC is a major blow for armor, so it was an okay trade in my mind.

TSWORD: "If a wise guy, will deploy a flexible in depth defense." Guess that makes me a wise guy! ;)

  7. Walker: I'm pretty sure that AP and AT mines were prohibited for that round, and that only daisy chain AT mines were permitted. If AP mines had been okay, you're right, they absolutely could have sealed off the fords.

As for re-joining squads: To tell you the truth, I haven't experimented enough to know which half squad rejoins which...so I just jiggle the position into the foxhole if the newly-joined squad if it's not in it already. If it really is always b joins a, that'd be helpful to know. Anyone else sure about this?

Ron: In all fairness to Barley, I think coordinating a strong, two-prong attack on this map would be very difficult. Despite the strength of his attack on the fords, I was still able to hold him off effectively. If he had split his forces, I wouldn't have had to readjust mine as much.

However, your suggestions are not without merit. As it happens, Broken! won his game in the other group using a two-prong attack, and was the only attacker in the Panther 76 group to win. I'll be interested to see the movies of that game when Rob posts them.

  8. To tell you the truth, Walker, I also had a few moments of trepidation, but I'm not sure that things would have been all that different if the Panthers had lived. More difficult, yes, but they wouldn't have been able to affect the fight in the town very much, because it was too late in the game for them to work their way around the lake and into the town. Their loss did help my score, though, and since I made it to the finals of the Tourney with only 1 point to spare, it's a good thing my Hell kitties won those duels.

Thanks for the comments, everyone. I'm glad to see that folks are getting something valuable from all the work Rob put in.

    And Fionn, I'm blushing. ;)

  9. I've had the same problem on my iMac, as have many Mac users, at least based on previous posts to this effect. The problem seems intermittent and unpredictable, and in my experience disabling the cache really didn't seem to matter.

What does seem to matter, although it may be purely superstition, is saving periodically. My freeze ups occur almost exclusively while either watching a movie and changing views rapidly, or just as I'm about to hit GO.

I have a suspicion that the problem somehow involves memory, but can't really pinpoint it (and don't have the technical skills to do so). I can go long stretches without any freezes, and then will have two or three in rapid succession.

All in all, it's annoying, but not a major hassle.
