It is not the actual sounds containing the distortion though.

The distortion that I get when I don't have enough memory sometimes sounds as if things are being slowed way down, and other times as if the sounds are being resampled at a much lower frequency in playback, so they get all choppy and weird. Occasionally it just sounds like it's clipping. When I relaunch CM it's usually just fine.
 2.
quote:
Originally posted by MuaHaHaHa: I gave CM 128MB of RAM and it still happened.

What are you changing the sounds to/with? Do you ever get distortion with the original sounds? (I don't have any more ideas, but I'd like to be able to change sounds without distortion too).
 3. I think it's a memory thing. Try setting the preferred memory to a much larger number. I've noticed the same problem, and usually it happens when theres a whole lot going on (smoke, lots of infantry running around, gunfire everywhere, screaming wounded etc.) Usually if I close a bunch of things and relaunch CM everything is fine (I have a lot of memory, but I also tend to edit very large files, so usually word and powerpoint are set to 60 meg or more.). I think I've got CM set to 60 meg now, and when I launch it with enough space available the sounds are ok (105 mm artillery in VoT is downright frightening if you're watching it from view 1 on the receiving end-- it freaked out the cats, too).
 4.
quote:
Originally posted by fubart: Give the developers a week in Hawaii (jungle inspiration, you know) and let 'em begin.

I know of a really nice little house on stilts in the rainforest on the Big Island (near Volcano Village) that they could stay in for inspiration. Spent two weeks there, rained 25 inches, and that was about average, but it's very pleasant rain. They could even help patrol the property perimeters for pakololo plants.
 5.
quote:
Originally posted by guachi: If someone could put together a 'regional accent' pack, that would be really sweet. I'm tired of hear Madmatt's voice. Jason

The guy doing some of the German phrases ("Fur das Vaterland" and "Mein Bein" sounds like some kind of regional accent. Does anyone know what it is (the person who did it is probably a member here).
 6. Do you know what date of preorders they're up to? I'm dying on the west coast at the thought that it could go out tuesday and take as much as a week. I might have to see if I can find time to fly out and pick up a copy!
 7.
quote:
Originally posted by grunto: for instance if you have a fast-move-crawl order and you get rid of the -move-crawl but keep the fast, then you can tack on another fast-move for example. has anyone else noticed this?

If you watch carefully you should see a pause between the old orders (that were given previously) and the ones you gave after you deleted several waypoints. It's pretty noticable when units are out of C&C, but if they're in C&C it will be the typical 8-13 seconds that you get for a new order on a healthy unit. It took me a while to notice it, but it is a pretty cool feature.
 8.
quote:
Originally posted by Madmatt: Ahh yes, you must mean the HGGUToWCKv3.4IIPMoWEEP? Yeah thats going to rock!!!

But I heard it wasn't going to include quantum gravity. They can't really claim it's realistic without including quantum gravity!
 9. If you really have to do the cut and paste thing, use BBEdit or BBEdit Lite (which is Freeware). It's a text editor only and there won't be any problem with accidentally saving as a word processor file.
 10. I had a worse one: I got home from work and there was a package about 6"x8", thick yellow packing envelope with priority mail tape wrapped around it. I got excited-- "They lied to us-they shipped it early!" I saw the return address was in Florida, and decided it couldn't be CM, but still couldn't figure out who it could be from. I looked at it to make sure it wasn't from the next unabomber, and opened one end, looking inside. I saw a medium thickish book, and as I pulled it out I saw the word "Beyond" at the top. "It is it!" forgetting all about florida-- it must say "Beyond Overlord". To my chagrin it said "Beyond Our National Parks" and was a slightly late birthday present from a family friend. It was horrible.
 11. What might help remind the new posters to the forum that spoilers should be announced is a big message at the beginning of the text you get when you register for the forum. That might reduce the number of times this thread has to be repeated/revived.
 12. Havermeyer: You've got peanut brittle crumbs on your face.
 13.
quote:
Originally posted by Renaud: The USS Constitution was plated in copper at and below the waterline so I think it qualifies. Ren

The copper was to reduce the growth of barnacles etc. on the bottom of the ship. IIRC The "Old Ironsides" comes from a duel with the Guerriere (sp) in which balls from the Guerriere bounced off the wooden sides of the hull (which were very thick and probably quite springy). Wooden Ships and Iron Men (from AH) was my first wargame, and I played that scenario a bunch of times. I never really got into the ships of the line battles, I think because I was pretty young and didn't see the tactical possibilities. I always preferred the smaller battles with just a few relatively lightly armed but more maneuverable ships.
 14. I saw a similar problem (I think also in turn 10). The amis had just gotten their reinforcements, and my opponent had plotted moves for them the previous turn. When we went to give orders, I couldn't get an orders menu for any of my pillboxes/bunkers, and he couldn't command two of the tanks. We sent BTS the files and wrote it off to the kind of stuff that happens in combat-- someone can't get the tank in gear and the PB crews won't listen to the radio... When we executed the movie, the tanks went to where they had been previously ordered and the PB brewed one of them up . I'm playing on a PB G3/300 OS 8.5, and my opponent has a PC of some sort.
 15. Spoiler alert for the few remaining people who haven't played VoT (if such exist). * * * Playing VoT against a live opponent (who is about to see the movie), I put one of my Shermans on the left (to his surprise ). He has a bunch of guys in the two story house right at the edge of his setup area, and I suspect one might have a shreck, so I'm parked back about 200 meters with the nose of the Sherman pointed down. I put a few nice rounds into the upper floors of the house, making his squads really unhappy, and then the return fire caused the Sherman to button up. Once buttoned, the Sherman starts shooting at some guys in the back of the house, but it turns out there's a slight bump in the terrain as you crest the rise to the house. It can't be more than a half meter, and the gunner starts pumping shells into the ground 40 m in front of the house, right next to my guys! The first one is forgivable, but he kept doing it. Fortunately the infantry got the hell out, but he just kept blasting away! Quite annoying (but having read plenty of accounts of "friendly" fire lately, not all that surprising.) There needs to be a "see optometrist" option in the orders menu.
 16.
quote:
Originally posted by Pham: Yes it would. It would indeed.

only about 6 away now [as I checked again after I posted this it's now at 50004] [This message has been edited by chrisl (edited 05-24-2000).]
 17. Save your old drivers before you install new ones. I installed the latest ATI drivers (from the Apple website) for my PB and everything worked fine except CM would hang up when I got to the "loading 3D graphics". When I put the old drivers back it's fine, and I've gotten used to the 640x480, but I have to use camera tilt=+1 when I use view #4.
 18.
quote:
Originally posted by Big Time Software: Update for other folks here... we just found and fixed this bug. Warning post to follow... Steve

That's pretty amazing-- I just sent a copy of my file a few hours ago. (was it even necessary?) I agree that you should pad your turnaround times. Don't you watch Star Trek?
 19. A sherman and a stug in CE firing almost simultaneously and killing each other. Funny to watch.
 20.
quote:
Originally posted by Robert Hall: ************ POSSIBLE VT SPOILER *********** . . . . . . . . . I can give Orders successfully to all my units EXCEPT 1 Sherman (reinforcements). This one Sherman's waypoints have disappeared - they were definitely there previously as it is in the middle of a moving 'marauding pack'. There is no way I can highlight this Sherman to give it Orders. All other Sherman's have retained their waypoints and are about to give Chris hell !

Maybe they managed to include battlefield mechanical breakdowns after all! Although it turns out that my PB can now see through pretty thick smoke to brew up members of his marauding pack of shermans. Anyway, the breakdown will keep it from being brewed up like its friends.
 21. I'm playing VoT by email as tbe germans and just recieved the movie back from turn 10. After watching the movie, it's my turn to put in orders so I'm trying to get the LOS from my concrete pillbox up on the hill and all I get is a system beep when I press l (I checked the caps lock key). I can check LOS etc from all the infantry units that I try, but I can't even get an orders menu from any of my live pillboxes. I'm playing on a Mac PB G3/300 with OS 8.5. I tried quitting and reloading a few times, and tried both "Combat Mission Demo" and "Combat Mission Demo.1" I've had a few instances in the past in which it wouldn't accept some keyboard and mouse input, but they always clear up when I quit and restart it. I even tried restarting the machine. (No Robert, it's not just because that Arty is clobbering me :-P).
 22. Me. I as soon as I can figure out how to find your profile I'll send you a setup.
 23. I have the same problem with a PB G3/300 -- it kicks me into 640x480 at launch. I'd rather have a larger field of view with worse graphics than the other way around if possible. I'm just glad the gold demo is out (been lurking and playing the AI since January). I'm going to go see how CE plays with the new version...
