  1. >The Supply Points were added as a SIMPLE form of

    >logistics for those who wanted to use them

    Correct.

    >(I don't think that any of the "canned" scenarios use them)

Most of the canned scenarios include supply points. To resupply a unit, click on the Supply button in its Unit Orders Window and then follow the screen instructions.

They do not include on map markers called Logistics Packs.

  2. From the user guide ...

Most scenarios allow limited, ammunition replenishment through the use of the Supply Window. Use the Supply button in the Unit Orders Window to summon the Supply Window. The Supply Window is a simplified, nonspecific representation of the many ways that additional ammunition can be in or get to a unit - by delivery, prestaging, carrying extra, scrounging, etc. Use of the resupply capability can often be very unrealistic. Its use should be governed by mutual agreement in two player games.

A transportable, user defined, Logistics Package marker can also be added to a scenario by using the Options/Add One Unit menu item. The Logistics Package marker can be used to resupply any unit that is located within 200 meters. The Supply Window is also used to access the supply points that are in a Logistics Package.

Minor resupply is addressed in a very conceptual way with a resupply button in the unit orders dialog. TacOps calculates a reasonable supply of extra items on hand and limited local delivery of more as each scenario starts up. The resupply number (supply points) is a function of the number and types of troops and equipment in the scenario, as well as the expense, bulk, and weight of the ammo that they are using. The function allows a player to avoid being unrealistically limited to a basic load, but it also prevents having too much of the good stuff. I don't see the need to burden the average player with more detail given the time and distance scale of the typical TacOps engagement - less than two hours of battle and less than 20 kilometers of movement. However, if a user wants to have supply dumps and trace a path to them before resupply he can do that as a personal goal.

  3. TacOps does not support the loading of vehicles inside of helicopters. In TacOps, helos carry vehicles in external slings with a max of one sling per helo.

Changing that is on the wish list but it would require a huge amount of code and the addition of a height field to the data base record of every vehicle. That would be a lot of trouble and weeks of work just so that a few large helos could carry a few more small vehicles.

  4. > in general terms, what's the difference between

    >the commercial and military versions of TacOps?

The retail version is limited to 20 players during network play. The military version allows more players. The record is about 50 computers on a dedicated LAN at Fort Knox plus a couple of hundred more players who were not on computers.

  5. > I'm based in the UK - any ideas how long delivery time is?

Your order should be shipped from a warehouse in Ireland. Some UK users have reported getting their orders within a week.

  6. > Wait a minute Major, I thought you did this b/c of a love

    > for the game and the people who play it. I feel so used.

Last year I got a private email from a formerly supportive hobby user who suggested that my military contract work had turned me into a "scheming whore". I would have preferred that he said "good natured" rather than "scheming". smile.gif

  7. > My order is winging its way as I type - I even put in for

    > the Military Reference CD, so you should be getting a bit

    > more for that Major

Thanks much. I will add you to the toast list at my familay fiesta this weekend. Just after the Australian and New Zealand armies who paid me yesterday for their TacOps ANZAC v5 licenses. smile.gif

When the game CD arrives, be sure to check the following URL for possible new patches.

  8. Probably, although they were working yesterday or the day before.

I will send a note to the web master about it.

If you didn't have "Pirate" in your nickname I would tell you some other places where you could download it. smile.gif

  9. TacOps v405_AQ update patches for Windows and Macintosh are now availabale from the downloads page at www.battlefront.com.

    http://www.battlefront.com/downloads.html

The Windows patch is titled "TacOps_405AQu.zip".

The Macintosh patch is titled "TacOps_405AQu.sit".

If the links do not show those filenames then hit the "Refresh" button on your web browser.

    A. Download and then Unzip or Unstuff the patch file for your OS.

    B. Then read and carefully follow the instructions contained in the file "Instructions & Copyright.txt". This is not an auto installer. You must manually copy/move each file from the patch folder to a precise location in your TacOps 4 folder - so as to replace any files or folders of the same name.

This patch is only for the retail editions of TacOps v403 through v405AP. Do not apply this patch package to TacOps v3.x or to any military version of TacOps - permanent damage will result. This patch is comprehensive for TacOps v403 through v405AP so there is no need to retain or install any previous patch.

Below are the changes made in this patch.

    v405AQ

User requests. Added the following unit types to the database:

    GM APC Boxer Ambulance.

    GM APC Boxer LMG

    GM APC Boxer AGL

    OP BMD1 with AT3 SAGGER.

    OP APC BTR60

    OP APC BTR60PB

    OP APC BTR70.

US Truck 5t AGL (generic )

US Truck 5t HMG (generic )

US Truck 5t LMG (generic )

User request. Increased troop cargo capacity of GM Boxer APCs from 9 to 10.

User request. Increased troop cargo capacity of GM FSCV Marder FO from 4 to 6.

Developer initiative. Revisited and tweaked the characteristics of OP APC BTR80, OP APC BTR80A, and OP APC BTR90 unit types.

Bug fix. Reduced the armor on BMP1 from 37/18/17 to 23/15/12.

Bug fix. The program failed to represent the small arms on the US Truck 5 ton as exposed weapons.

Bug fix. Introduced in last patch. The program would crash when the "Add One Unit" window was used to add an OPFOR Mortar Carrier 82mm M60 unit type to a scenario.

Bug fix. Introduced in last patch. The OP APC BOVM was wrongly coded as carrying an AT5 ATGM rather than a 7.62mm machine gun.

  10. >Is there any bonus available for the forward air controllers

    >such as that given to Artillery Forward Observers?

No. The accuracy of an air strike in TacOps is determined by its accumulated stress or discouragement level. The more stuff that shoots at the air strike on its way in, the less likely it will be to drop its ordnance accurately or at all.

  11. The host computer umpire PIN of zero is the only PIN that can be assigned to markers of different colors.

The game engine should refuse to allow you to assign a PIN other than zero to units of more than one color.

  12. Good stuff. Thanks.

Just to be sure that you know this ...

You can have multiple players within the same force color. In other words you can have say three red players, five blue players, etc. Each player may be of a particular force color but the program will only allow each to give orders to the unit markers with that player's PIN.

  13. That is on the wish list but it isn't likely to get done soon since the behaviour can already be handled by dismounting the Milan team.

It is a bigger change than it sounds due to the exisiting body of code and the number of other portable ATGMs that ought to get a same benefit once this is done for the Milan.

  14. > If you really want to muddy up the waters ask a LAAD guy

    > where he rode even though before the ADA version of the LAV

    > came out we had them riding shotgun on troop tractors (LAV

    > with turret off and or towing a cattle wagon)

    Translation? Point?

  15. What armament would be correct for a UK Gazelle?

Can the Land Rover manuever with the Milan mounted? I have information that the system is too delicate to be left mounted on a moving vehicle.

  16. Tell me what you want.

Note however that I don't usually care to duplicate unit types that are already in the data base if there is no significant difference other than the names of the small arms. For example, I probably would not add a UK .50 cal machine gun team for you since there is already a US .50 cal team.

You will see some duplications in the CF, AU, and NZ unit lists but that is because I was required to add those during military contract work.
