  1. Welcome hornpiper!

The only advice I can really give you is to read up on the many topics here in this forum. Check out the CM Tips and Tricks forum for more direct info about tactics. There probably are a couple of guides hanging around on this forum. Maybe do a search for 'guide' or 'manual'.

However if you're like me, you will probably enjoy developing your own tactical style. Playing against the AI at first will help develop your tactics, but eventually you will probably play against humans and that is when you'll really will see your tactics develop. Humans opponents are unpredictable.

Myself, I don't read much on tip and tricks here on this forum as I would rather learn myself through 'hit and miss'.

Enjoy developing your own sense of tactics. I did and I think that's the thing that is the most fun about Combat Mission.

  2. NS,

Weclome aboard! You sound just like I did when I first discovered this new game (CMBO) back in last 1999. At that time, I couldn't believe that someone was creating a game with such detail to tactics, morale and the new WEGO system. I couldn't wait for CMBO to be released.

Anyway, I like the system that CM has. The only two things that I would change is to set scenario parameters to enable or disable the following:

    1) Allow units to choose targets themselves instead of allowing the user to choose the target for the unit. I think it is more realistic to allow the unit AI to choose the unit instead of a company or battalion CO to tell each unit what to fire at.

    2) Allow either the Detailed Armor Hits Off or On. I know that there is a HotKey for this, but it should have been a scenario parameter set for both sides and cannot be changed once the battle begins. I always play with the detailed hits OFF in my PBEM games and I trust that the guys I fight against also have it off. It's way more fun and realistic not knowing where the sheel hit the target and if it actually penetrated and caused any type of damage. Instead, you should have to judge the way the target reacts to the hit to see if there was any damage done. This allows the user to bluff his opponent by using armor that has sustained, let's say, a gun hit. The opponent won't know this if he has the Detailed Armor Hits OFF.

    Just my two cents...

  3. Thanks to all who replied. Very interesting to read.

I bit the bullet and bought a 17inch Samsung SyncMaster 712N LCD with 12ms response rate for $380 CAN ($70 off on a sale). I have a two week full return and refund period to try it out. If I don't like the new monitor, I'll return it and get a CRT.

    Thanks again!

  4. Looking at replacing my old trusty Samsung SyncMaster 15GLe 15 inch CRT monitor.

I was figuring on buying a LCD monitor with a response time at 12ms, but I've also read some comments that sticking with a CRT monitor is better for gaming. That the increased refresh rate (75-85MHz) of a CRT will be better than a 12ms response time (ghosting problems).

Not withstanding the price and the physical space savings, is an LCD worth paying the extra cost over a same size CRT monitor? Game wise, I play all sorts of games (RTS, sports, wargames, strategy). Like I wrote before I was looking to buy a LCD, but some of these anti-LCD comments may be scaring me off a LCD and I might just get a 19 inch CRT instead.

My current video card is a GeForce4 Ti4200-8x.

Any opinions on LCD versus CRT?

Many thanks to any and all who reply.

  5. Krazy Canuck:

Regarding your thinking of the 5900XT, here's a quote from Tom's Hardware Guide website regarding that card. I have no opinion of this card but maybe Redwolf does.

    GeForce FX5900 SE/XT, GeForce PCX 5900

Pros- DX9 support, excellent DX8 performance, good AA/AF peformance

Cons- poor DX9 performance, and you can get a Radeon 9800 Pro for little more, which is a better card in every area. Radeon X700 Pro (and of course faster GeForce 6600GT, Radeon X700XY) is a much better choice in PCI express segment.

  6. Krazy Canuck: Here is where I bought my Ti4200-8x card. Price is more expensive, but it is in Canadian dollars and the card is brand new. Card arrived in about 8 days and runs perfectly, even overclocked!

No problems with these guys at all.

When I ordered one last month, they had one card left after my order so I would phone them first to see if they have any left. Or better yet, use the LiveHelp function on the right side of the page.
