  1. The bottom picture is from the Twilight 2000 Role Playing Game Warsaw Pact Vehicle Guides back in the late '80s/early '90s.

The Twilight 2000 system also had casemate versions of the M-1 (M-1A2 Giraffe) and Leopard (Leopard III).

Not saying that the thing doesn't exist...

  2. I look at it this way - I paid $45 for CMBO five years ago. Did I get my moneys worth? Of course. $45 is equivalent to dinner and the movies for two people on a Wednesday night. By all rights, CMBO could have retailed for nearly $1000 and it still would have been worth it (if I could have forseen playing it five years later).

What the module system does is capitalize on that. If I buy a game at $45 and a module every few months for $20 to bring it to the width and beadth of CMBO (figure the game and three modules for $105 total to get to that level) and it'll still be worth it. By all mean, BF.com deserves that money. Everyone wins, still, though us players lose a steal of a deal.

  4. I posted this in the other "Bones" thread, but everyone ignored it there, so I'll attempt to get even more people to ignore it here. ;)

    My current wet dream:

CM2: Korea 2006 That will include core ROK, local US 2nd ID (Armor/Mech and Light Infantry) and NKPA forces.

    Modules could then look like:

Korea: Strykers in Seoul! which will add all the various Stryker models from the US-based 3rd Brigade of the 2nd Infantry Division, which would likely reinforce the Peninsula in war. Adds a whole bunch of missions to the game and maybe some of the older NKPA stuff (KOKSAM 170mm howitzer support, T-34/85s, BTR-152), older ROK stuff (M-48A3/A5s) and maybe a Seoul Terrain Tile Set.

Korea: Semper Fi! which will add a complete OOB for the USMC (1st and 3rd Marine Divisions) so we'll have AAVs, AAAVs, various LAVs, marine infantry, naval gunfire support, Harrier and Cobra air support, etc. Maybe an operation about a modern amphibious landing at Inchon or Hamhung (first battle is coordinating a MEU amphib assault - two companies in AAVs and a heliborne company against a NKPA costal defense force with some tank support, second battle is holding against counterattack, etc.).

    and finally

Korea: Red Tide! which will add the Chinese People's Liberation Army - Type 98 MBTs, Type 63A amphibious tanks, etc.

Figuring $45 or so for the core game and $20-30 for each module, Battlefront could potentially be swimming in money, especially if they snag defense contracts. I could totally see West Point or the Marine Corps Warfighting Labs using something like this.

  5. Though I'm hardly a voice around here, I want to express my joy with the whole concept of games and modules. My current wet dream is that one of the upcoming CMx2 titles will be something like:

We feel the same way. 9 years of doing nothing but WWII was OK, but 9 more is out of the question. The new engine allows us to do both WWII and other stuff, so everybody should be happy. Especially us :D

  8. I really don't have the time to read through the whole thread, as I'm at work and not chained to my desk, but here's my $0.02...

I'm tired of WWII games. Seriously... how many times can you fight in the Battle of the Bulge or on Normandy before you get worn out? I've taken Shermans against Panthers, Cromwells against Tigers for years now. I know exactly what'll happen if I take a platoon of M4s against a platoon of PzVs. I know how to assault buildings with an MG42 in support. I know the feeling of exquisite glee when your M5 light tank kills a Tiger with a totally lucky shot to the rear.

I'd really like a game that lets me do something else. I don't care if it's Pakistani M48s against Indian Centurions, Israeli AMX-13s against Egyptian T-34s or Soviet T80s against American M60A3s. Just please... let me fight another war.

Maybe we need an entire thread devoted to "Stuff that CMX2 Isn't" and we can all devote pearls of wisdom to it.

I regret I won't be the first one to suggest health packs.

    Go to www.ofpec.com and lookup "camera.sqs". ;)
  10. One excellent book that I think gets overlooked a lot is THE WAR THAT NEVER WAS by Michael Palmer. The premise is that long after the Cold War has ended, former US and Soviet leaders get together and wargame a "What if" scenario just to see who would have won.

It's excellent. Much faster paced that Clancy, a lot more coherent than Hackett (though I read that when I was 12 - but I still remember being instensely frustrated with it) and it doesn't just concentrate on central Europe. In fact, Germany is largely overlooked in favor of more exotic locales like Turkey, Scandanavia, North Africa , Korea, etc. You get to storm Bardufoss with Soviet paratroops, attack the Bosporous with Naval Infantry, defend Greece with the 10th Mountain Division and fight the Soviets in the Indian Ocean.

Great read - and it'll make you wanna fight those battles in CMX2. smile.gif

  11. Hi Steve

How exactly will parallel development work? I mean, if you're making two or three games at a time, where are you going to pull people and research from?

I ask because I work on mod teams for another game where we do almost exactly what you're talking about - take an engine and creating something entirely different out of it. Granted we do it for free and as a hobby... but I'm curious to know if you (BFC) don't have an interest in, say, modern combat or medieval warfare, how would you handle a version of CMx2 to cater to those interests? Sub contract it? Straight partnerships? What would be the criteria for that?

I know I've got a merry band of modellers, texturers and programmers who would love to see a version of CMx2 set in, say China 2010 or Germany 1985. We'd jump at the chance to help you guys out and we've got the experience bringing modern US combat vehicles and weapon systems into games. If we get free copies of CMx2 we may even work for free. ;)tongue.gif

  12. I'm going to be frank here.

I initially joined the CPX about a week before the actual event and I was pretty excited. I received the briefing shortly after and I suddenly lost a lot of interest. In fact, I had the option to go in to work on a Saturday or sleep in a bit and play the CPX, but I decided to bow out of the CPX and go in to work because, in all honesty, the scenario did not appeal to me at all.

Nuclear weapons? Strange fictional orders of battle?

What I was really looking for in this scenario was something like we used to play back in the mid-late '90s in the TacOps community - straight up fights based on plausible real-world scenarios.

Back when Team A would have a US Battalion Task Force and Team B might have a BTR regiment and you were given a brief background on the scenario. Call me boring and old fashioned, but I think that's vastly more fun and interesting compared to nuclear weapons and a composite battalions made up of BTR-Ts, Leopard 2s, Strykers, T-80s, etc.

It just did not interest me, and I'm sorry I dropped out of the CPX but it wasn't at all like I was hoping it would be before I read that briefing. Had I been given some more detail about the mission before hand, like "Fictional battalion-level force on force" I would maybe have not expressed interest at all.

I do, however, look forward to when I might read a CPX call for players announing something like "North Korean push across the DMZ" or "Canadian Brigade Group in Bavaria '87!".

  13. Yeah, that's what I'm there for. Every day for a 4-5 hour shift at my booth. This'll be my first IITSEC... I'm curious to see how it goes.

Hope to see you there. smile.gif
