Have tried most stuff now, art support, reserves, reinforcements and also moving units to certain points and reacting to a certain unit count.

It is actually a lot more straitforward than it seems. Also you can program the major part of your mission before adding triggers.

Some obvious things took me some time to grasp, like place holders!

If want to use a lot of triggers than some previous coding experience (any!) helps. But its not a must.

I'm not sure but it seems that the Map Editor will be for static objects that are on the map mesh, like houses, trees, trenches, etc. I don't think we will be able to alter the the terrain mesh from what I read.

Also the map size can be altered in the Mission Editor. At least the area where the missions take place. Most missions use half the area.

  3. I'm not going to answer you questions but just tell you my experience. You have to find out if the game suits you or not. If you like it for what it is and what it is not doesn't bother you then the game is for you.

I did not pre-order the game. Waited. Played the demo. Didn't like it. The worst thing for me was that the controls felt totally awkward and unnatural. Also that mission was way too difficult for me.

I read loads and loads of threads here point out all kinds of faults in the game and bugs and so on. There was this very strange energy going on. Still I had hope! smile.gif

Some user here made a mod available where you got every unit from the start. I gave it a try and started to enjoy it. After playing a few times the controls started to feel natural, to my great surprise. Then people started to talk about the editor and that did it for me.

I bought the game 3 days ago. I had a problem with the game freezing when I have shadows on. A patch for that is on the way. Meanwhile I'm having a blast with my first mission made with the editor! Totally immersed in the experience.

So far the tanks are reversing and behaving much better than they did in the demo for me.

Anyway maybe this will help you somehow.

  4. If you open Windows task manager you'll find out how CPU hungry this baby is!!! 100% use, all the time the mission is going on!! A good vid card should help but a good processor should come along!

Now that I can actually finish the missions and test my missions made in the editor I can say, that yes it can gat choppy if you really increase the units.

I lowered the quality settings and it has improved the performance quite a bit. I'm also thinking of upgrading my machine but for now this will do.

    Thanks Martin!

Just so you know, I tried disabling music and EAX and did not help.

Disabled shadows (along with music and EAX) and have not experienced a freeze so far.

Haven't had time to play much so I'm not sure if this fixed it for sure or not. Same situation as Pak40. Apparently is the graphics and not the sound that are the problem.

Anyway, looking forward to having may shadows back! :D

  6. I have to say that the freezes are really annoying and yes, the game becomes unplayable since there is no way to finish a mission!

On the other hand it runs real smooth on my machine, which is hardly high end. I still have to use Fraps to check the frame rate but it doesn't look choopy and there is no stuttering either even when there is a lot going on.

I also had no problem downloading, installing or with the licensing like some people have reported. Maybe I was lucky!

I'm having a lot of fun learning the editor which is what I'll be messing with until BF/1C find a way around this issue.

Again, PLEASE BF/1C, stop reading the other forum and forget about LOS and targeting and other minor adjustments. In my opinion those are not even issues.

What this game needs for sure is to have some major incompatibility issues sorted out fast.

But I need to say that I new all that before ordering so I did not expect anything different. What I do expect is that BF/1C take this seriously ,which I'm sure they will, and I'm confident soon we will be able to enjoy this game as it should be.

  7. I just downloaded the game yesterday. Played 3 times, 3 freezes! Only way out is to restart the machine. No other program is running in the background and was not even connected to the Internet. All freezes at different times.

Used the Editor for hours without any problems.

    My specs:

    AMD 64 3500+ (2.21Hz) 1,50 GB of RAM

Win XP Pro - ServPack 2

    MSI GForce 6600 GT

    On a side note:

The game seems awesome. Devs should concentrate on fixing and patching technical issues like this and totally disregard other requests that have to do with gameplay and even personal preferences from people that probably wont like this game anyway. Top priority should be given to have this game running smothly for everyone, as much as possible.

  8. Yeah. I'm downloading it. Will be here in a few more hours. Love to have the hard-copy but import taxes would make it twice the price so the PDF manual will have to do.

Apparently the mission editor is not user friendly at all. It seems like I'll spend a lot of time looking at mission files to figure stuff out, hours of testing, frustration and .... loads of fun! Let me check if I have enough coffee for tonight!

  9. and playing the demo many times, today I decided to order it.

It's not CM, its not CC but only from playing the demo many times I started to get used to it and to my surprise its starting to feel more natural.

Most games I spend more time in the mission editor and modding than with the missions themselves. Now, people say the mission editor is really complex in TOW. How could I resist! :D

People should have the right to criticize a product what I think inappropriate is the tone some people use implying the developers/publishers are somehow trying to con them ou are just plain incompetent.

I for one have a great respect for their work.

    Thanks for the answer Martin.

I guess that way is a lot more intuitive and... fun! :D

  11. I don't know, I think they already look pretty good. You can notice some buildings explode into little pieces, other times in half and then collapse. The animations of the collapsing building starts slow and gains momentum in the end , very realistic. Smoke and dust vary...

Another thing is the transparent balconies and some walls, I really enjoyed the look of that.

Of course there is always room for improvement but if it was released just as it is now I'd already be very happy. It looks light years ahead of the CMx1 graphics.

    Martin

You talk about clicking on the map but in the video you are actually drawing the line right there on the 3D view, which looks really cool. But which one is it gonna be? If you use a map (top down view) you can be more precise in your xy coordinates, whereas in 3d mode you might mistakenly draw the line further away from the target. I'm curious to know how the system works.

Although Martin himself has stated that it will be radically different I don't expect it to be anything like TOW in any aspect. BF has a away to approach game problems that is fundamentally different from the way 1C does. So I imagine it will be easier to master the controls and the game itself.

People that never played CM get used to it very fast, whereas TOW takes longer and never feels quite natural.

The interface in the beta videos looks really slick and the graphics look awesome. But yes, ther e will be loads of complains about the way the animations of the finger of the soldier scratching his head is done. :D

  14. Most of the issues mentioned in some posts are legitimate. Even stuff mentioned by crazy in his review! :D I don’t like his tone and I think his here more to get some attention than to actually discuss the game but that doesn’t mean the things he pointed out are irrelevant.

What I think is the general feel for the game is this: This game could be so good! It’s almost good, it’s almost great, it’s almost what I wanted it to be… but…

Is it crap then? No, of course not, you see there is potential here…. Well now, a kid has got potential, a 40 year old is what he is, period.

I don’t know what it is that makes the gameplay feel so good in some games and others just don’t happen. Then again this could be a personal issue, and of course it is my personal oppinion.

Anyway this is probably also premature since I didn’t play the game just the demo so far. Maybe a patch that addresses a few issues will make the magic happen, who knows.

Crazy got it totally wrong when he says that BF asks the same price as the “big boys” for their products but expect us to be condescending because they are small and really nice people.

What happens is that the only companies releasing realistic wargames are small companies. Wargamers are used to put up with crap graphics as long as the game is realistic and immersive. When they see games like CM and TOW and CM:SF they say WOW, look at the graphics! Not because they are better than most games currently on the market but because wargames don’t usually have that kind of graphics, that’s all.

But I think Martin made this point very clear in his post and Crazy seems clever enough to have got it so I figure he just likes attention and to be confrontational achieves his goal. So much so that here am I adding fuel to the fire. 

  15. I don't think it is a problem to have people like crazylegsmurphy come here and write in detail all the things he does not like about the game.

The thing that really puzzles me is why would someone spend so much time writing about games he does not like! One post would be enough, I guess. Then go on to some other forum talk about games you do like.

Imagine if I decided to go to all sites of games I dislike to write "reviews" and then posts and more posts about them! I'd do nothing more of my life.

That's why I stick to sites of games I gave a good chance of liking. And luckily, most of the time, I do like them.

I have to say though that crazylegsmurphy judges this game from a perspective different from most people here - wargamers. He's not wrong from where he stands but he is obviously not the target market for this type of game.
