  1. Hi,

This looks great.. thanks to norrin :).

Quick question.. I am not natural at this.. just mechanically do as I am told.

In the second half of the Sweet text file there all the settings for saturation and much more.

Which would be the best to use to adjust Saturation and Brightness in the way they are changed by adjustment of the individual files in the standard graphics editors?

Sorry to ask.. but there are quite a few that may do the job.. should really just slow test them all.. ;) but thought it would just ask first.

    Thanks again,

    All the best,

    Kip.

  2. Hi,

Yup... I agree with the consensus here.

For recon vehicles.. bailing out the crew to “Hunt...” forward on foot to tree line or some such point is often an essential part of the mix. Also... take your time.. difficult with the time limits on some scenarios.

Plus.. I also agree that SOP for Hunt orders in particular would be a huge plus. Hunt is different, it is special. There are a number of uses I would like it for. Pure recon, but also sometimes very cautiously sneaking forward and when an enemy is identified blasting away. But for now asking a bit much ;).

Lucky to have CM at all.. :)

    All the best,

    Kip.

PS. It is not really a “work round...” for recon troops in armoured cars to stop and go forward on foot. In the accounts I have read of such troops this was very common. The armoured cars were in some ways for getting about in and fighting other armoured cars. But a lot of recon was on foot

PS no 2. The great thing about CMX2, is the upgrade system. Away out in front of all other games already and slowly tweaked and improved the whole time.

  3. Kohlenklau,

I didn’t mean to be rude about the current crop; there certain are campaigns out there.

I think the tone of question.. “good old days..” made me default to the CMMC type which had a far more hard core, if I can put that way, command post element to it than the present campaigns. Also very big difference in scale.

But the FGM campaigns are certainly very skilfully handled.. this is not a criticism...

    All the best,

    Kip.

  4. Hi,

This is already the case.. to some extent..

You probably do know this but just to explain what I am getting at.

If you build/paint a setup area for Group 3 say in the AI editor for Allied forces..  you paint it along the edge of a village in Belorussia, 300m long and 20m wide. In the unit editor you have assigned to Group 3 one infantry platoon, one 76mm ATG, one 45mm ATG, one tank hunter section and two snipers..  But you do not place them in the setup area on the deploy map. You just don’t deploy any of the Soviet units. All are assigned as with the units for Group 3.. a setup area in the AI editor is painted on, and units in the units editor assigned to that Group.

Then you pick the German units you wish to play with in the game and place them in their setup areas using the deploy map.

When you launch the game to play it, the Soviet units in say Group 3 above will be semi-randomly placed along the 300m by 20m village edge. Randomly but quite cleverly in fact. It is normally not too stupid. You will not know where the ATGs are to give an example.

This is my favourite way to play CMX2 :).

I take QB maps and move them to the Scenarios folder, then build ultra flexible “QBs..” using the above technique in the normal editor.

    If you follow me.. ;).

Not easy, and very confusing if not familiar with CMX2 editors.. but for those who are.. very quick way of building ultra flexible QBs.

    All very good fun,

We are lucky to have CM at all..

    All the best,

    Kip.

  5. Hi,

    Sadly... no.

    Not of the same scale.

The great CMMC organised by James Bailey and using CMx1 set in Normandy was the finest wargame ever put out there. I don’t do role play, did not think it would be much fun, but as it turns out was a staff officer in the 43rd , artillery, and it was tremendous. Discussing the options, then issues in the orders and waiting for the results to come in , then discussing more plans..

A high quality operational layer will help a lot, there is some serious work being done on this. There is a high quality, commercial operational layer in development. The guy leading it is very competent and knows what he is about.. am optimistic.. but we will have to see..

Small scale CMMCs are easily done.. but the trap many used to fall into was underestimating the ratio of umpires/games masters : players needed. People have learnt this lesson thus are reluctant to embark on the bigger CMMC type projects.

I would be very keen, and willing to be one of the umpires if enough umpires could be found relative to the number of players.

The “command post exercise...” model developed by James Bailey is the ultimate CM :).

    All very interesting stuff,

We are unbelievably lucky to have CM at all.. just look at the competition ;),

    All the best,

    Kip.

  6. Andreas, hi,

All I can do for you is repeat some of the above advice.

When learning CM you need to play very slowly, be very carefully, every digital life counts, and micromanage.

Slowly, slowly, carefully, carefully.. and you will learn the best techniques.

A lot of the campaigns are very tough. Each to their own, but I am not shy about starting again when things go wrong and I have done a Lessons Learnt analysis of which techniques would have worked better.

    Good luck,

    All the best,

    Kip.

  7. Hi,

For those who may be interested..

Jane’s Defence have their annual review available for free download. Half way down the page, just off centre. Was there an hour ago but has been up for a while so if interested go for it..

Just Google Jane’s.com   and it should come up. (Am reluctant to give the URL because I have been reminded that I own a “warning..” from Moon on posting commercial links. I posted the link Scourge of War site.. I think Moon must have been in a bad mood ;). )

Anyway.. Jane’s tone is different from that of most here. But if you look at the posts on this thread all it shows is that we are all human. We do all have prejudices and likes and dislikes and there is nothing wrong with that. We start with different sympathies. It is called being human.

On the internal Russian stuff, economy and such, a chap called Dr. Richard Connolly from Birmingham University just tipped up on the BBC as a talking head and generally thinks Russia will survive economically better than many in the western media believe.

I don’t know him either and have followed who wins and who loses economically as closely as I have militarily all my life.  But there are alternative views on that subject too.

To be open about my sympathies, or starting point. When bullets a start fly I default to what today we would call The Five Eyes, Russia and Poland. So think it was unwise for the EU, with US support, to have got so involved in the way they did. Many in Britain agree with that but not all. It inevitably resulted in greater suffering. But each to their own. BTW.. Jane’s tend to agree with me… but they too are only one more of many views.

We are truly lucky to have CM to argue about.. so far ahead of all others it is almost embarrassing..

    All the best,

    Kip.
