  1. One feature I am missing in wargames is the ability to take notes while plotting my moves. Often I would like to write down something like "watch infantry on left flank" or "tigers moving west". Besides that, it would be useful when making After Action Reports - much better than writing something on paper.

Would it be feasible to put something like a notepad in the game that you could pull up with a keystroke and write down a few notes? Just wondering...

  2. Only such "artifical" and abstracted game engines as e.g. West Front's need special "spot" bonuses and rules, because in a 2D environment everything has to be resolved based on die rolls. With a 3D landscape this is not necessary anymore, as LOS and spotting can be handled more realisticly.

And unlike modern recon vehicles which are often equipped with top-notch thermal imaging systems and satellite links, during WW2 a recon vehicles didn't really have any special equipment which enhanced its spotting abilities. A pair of binoculars and a set of good eyes, I'd say... smile.gif

The only ability a recon vehicle should have (and historically usually had) is speed. Because after the enemy was spotted, the recon vehicle would usually turn around and get the hell outathere. The fighting usually is left to those whose job it is, the tanks and infantry, UNLESS the force encountered is really small.

  3. Yep, I couldn't run the movies on my new computer with QT3, then downloaded QT4 and all works perfectly. I would actually recommend downloading QT4 anyways - it's free and a lot better than 3. Looks like Apple is starting some kind of offensive against all the other .avi's and .things...

  4. I have a few more questions on the campaign system because a few points are still not clear to me (speak slllooowwwllyy... smile.gif)

    - after making the big map, how is the position and size of individual battle maps determined? Are they pre-assigned by the author?

    - Does every battle map have to have local victory locations or is one set of VLs somewhere in the middle of the big map sufficient? If there are no local VLs, how is the end of a battle determined, i.e. at which point do you switch to another map? Do you have to exit your troops from a mapedge in order to advance/retreat? Is there a time limit for a battle, after which there is a break and the next battle starts?

    - What do you mean with being able to "relocate" troops between scenarios? Will there be a certain radius within which you can move your troops from the point they were at the end of the scenario? If reinforcements arrive - can they be placed on the map in between battles?

  5. In the tank penetration discussion, what obviously everybody forgot is those nice colorful penetration diagrams. As far as I understand, this is where all hit location and penetration calculations are coming together. Look at them - it seems to me (if I understand correctly) that once you know where the shot is coming from, you know the percentage by which the shell is going to take out the target. Armor slope, thickness and angle are all taken into account on the graphs already, so there is no need to trace the impact pixel anymore... but of course I might be wrong...

    Fionn:

As to copyrights: if somebody reprints an old war document, he still doesn't earn a copyright on it. He can only copyright new material (like his comments or clarifications), but not the old document. You are free to quote (even use graphics) from the reprinted document. It shows good manners, however, when you at least mention the source that reprinted the document. I have looked into this copyright thing myself before I posted parts of the "US War Department Book on German Military Forces" on my site...

  6. Can't really answer on the physics part, but yes, CM will come with exactly the same scenario/campaign/map editor tools that BTS will be using to do the scenarios and campaigns included in the game. From one of Steve's earlier posts I also understand that Battlefront.com will offer free custom made scenarios for download.

As to the "less famous" battlegrounds: since most of the "more famous" battlegrounds involve battles at divison scale, I could imagine that a lot of scenarios in CM - with its focus on company/battalion action - will invlove the "less famous" battles. Try it yourself - try to find detailed accounts of company or battalion action, and you will realize how much of what is available out there (books etc.) really only describes divisions and regiments...

  7. Since you mentioned tactics:

as far as I know it was standard German tactic to place the HGM (or any MG) on the ground floor and an observing team on the top floor. That way you can lay down grazing fire down the whole street and basically close it down for ANY traffic... smile.gif

If you put the MG on the top floor you forfeit this opportunity since all bullets will end up in the ground a few meters behind your target. Additionally, there is no real advantage when you have the HMG high, because although it can maybe get better LOS it can also be taken out more easily from the distance, by an HE round for example... smile.gif

  8. Honestly, Charles, I wouldn't be too worried about it now. CM is not there yet, and until people get to see and play a demo they will doubt. Hell, if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I would be still doubting if this or that can really be as good as you say. I would suggest not to waste even a little bit of energy trying to convince people how good the game will be. CM doesn't need that, it will clearly speak for itself.

And still: you will always get those people that are not convinced by anything, that think CC3 and West Front are the absolute top notch wargames(simply because THEY are good at them and bad at CM)... but that's life. If you'd release CM right now (even without the AI as a plain multiplayer game) you'd beat any other wargame on the market with ease...

An example: I've shown a friend of mine the QT movies. He's never played anything else in his life than racing and sports games. I believe he has pre-ordered the game a few days ago... smile.gif
