Rambler
When making normal maps from scratch, is 50% gray considered the 0, +z trends white and -z trends black?
MikeyD
There's probably a 'real' technical explanation out there, but to my eyes 50% grey comes out too dark for a useful 'neutral' background grey. Somewhere closer to 40% grey looks more neutral. Lighter raises bumps and darker makes depressions for the directed light to catch. The nice thing about modding is you can't break anything. Experiment with high contrast, low contrast, sharp, blurry, and just discard what you don't like. Too many online tutorials are about creating pebbly monster skins and robot armor when all you really want to do is to have a buckle on a napsack catch the light.
