Tonyswash
How does Combat Mission: Battle for Normandy compare to Theatre of War 3 Korea? Has anyone played both games and if so what did you think? Is Theatre of War 3 Korea as realistic as Battle for Normandy?
easytarget
You could just grab the CMBN demo and see for yourself, nothing replaces first hand experience.
Sergei
Is Theatre of War 3 Korea as realistic as Battle for Normandy? Not even close. Especially as TOW doesn't attempt to model real life formations, so it's more like the old Close Combat games where you would buy some assorted units and fight with them. Artillery and air support work by just pointing and clicking, there is no attempt to simulate real life doctrines. And then you have things like infantry occupying empty tanks and driving them around... All of this goes hand in hand with the design goal of creating a fun, fast paced RT strategy which still is deeper than your usual Command & Conquer game. Kind of like Close Combat or Total War. But then some of the stuff in the TOW games is very explicitly modelled, like armour penetration modelling. I have no idea how they compare under the hood in that respect. But they are also very different types of games, so comparing is difficult. It'd be like describing a reindeer as a zebra with horns and no stripes.
Karac
ToW is in fact an arcade game with a whole lot of micromanagement. It tries to be a a realistic game (ballistic and armor modelling, different type of ammo, big maps) but it fails miserably in form of gameplay. Every mission is scripted as hell, enemy is attacking from everywhere (during brefings You get very little info on the situation so You just have to guess what's going to happen). Make one mistake in positioning Your troops and in 9/10 situations You'll have to load the mission again. Zero fun. I can't understand why the spend so much time in trying to model so many great things according to reality and then they put all of this in a Starcraft and C&C like missions. Sure, the graphics look great, effects are top notch but the gameplay sucks. After several attempts on ToW2 Africa I finally gave up. So like Sergei said, there is nothing to compare if You are looking for a solid wargame.
