The Allied forces led by Lt. Gen Alan Cunningham were ultimately turn back, but Rommel's use of the Africa Special Purpose Division and the 21st Panzers prevented him from advancing into Egypt until December 23 by which time the Afrika Korps was at its weakest strength and headed directly toward Montgomery's forces at El Alamein.
