ropey
Hi Anyone out there have a list of unit numbers for Brit/Indian/Canadian units in Italy, especially in the DIADEM battles? I'm trying to identify units in IWM photographs. Cheers
JasonC
British 4th, 78th infantry divisions 6th armoured division 24th guards brigade British-Indian 4th, 8th, 10th Indian infantry divisions Canadian 1st Canadian infantry division 5th Canadian armoured division New Zealand 2nd New Zealand division South African 6th South African Armoured division Polish 3rd rifle division (Carpathian) 5th infantry division (Kresowa) 2nd Polish armoured brigade There was also one brigade of free Italians serving with the Brits on the east coast. That is the top level at least...
ropey
Sorry Jason, I obviously wasn't clear enough. I meant the vehicle ID numbers like 50 for 59th Fld Coy, RE in 4th Div; 60 for 24 Bn, 2 NZ Div; 52 for 18th Regt, 2 NZ Div, etc. Some of the photos have Carriers with 45 clearly visible, others of Priests (Sextons?) with 76, etc. Someone out there may have lists of these unit numbers for each or any of the Divs involved in DIADEM. JonS
Hi Ropey, AFAIK, there weren't any Sextons in Italy, so they'd be Priests. 2(NZ)Div was differen in that it had unique tac numbers for its units (60 for 24 Bn, 2 NZ Div; 52 for 18th Regt, 2 NZ Div, etc.) The rest of the Commonwealth - at least the UK and Canada anyway - used standard numbers. 76 is the SP artillery regt in an armd div - presumably 6th Armd in this case. Therefore, without knowing more about the unit or vehicle concerned, it's impossible to be more specific. In general, for an Inf Div: Div HQ, GOC, Def and Employment Pl, Int Fd Security Section, Fd Cash Office, Padre (blck background): 40 Recce Regt (Green over blue): 41 MG Bn (Black): 64 Provost Coy (black): 79 Div Sigs (white over blue): ??
