What resolution are you running your Windows XP desktop at ?

The first thing that happens when you launch any of the CM series under Windows is that the game will present you with resolutions to select. These appear as black screens with a white/green/bluish box with text listing the current resolution/refresh rate and possibly other info in it in the middle of the screen. This is done automatically and you're presented with one resolution and a corresponding vertical refresh rate at a time. If you don't select what is on screen (via the 'Select' button), then within 5 to 10 seconds the next lower refresh rate is presented (for example 1024x768 at 120Hz and then possibly 1024x768 at 100Hz) - this also will happen if you press the 'Skip' button.

The first resolution offered will be your current desktop resolution, however the refresh rate will be the maximum for that resolution as offered by your video driver (and not your monitor definition). This can result in black screens, monitor error messages or a 'scrambled' screen for many monitors since the combination of a refresh rate and higher resolutions may be beyond the monitor's capability to display. Typically waiting for a little while may produce a resolution that can be display properly on your screen.

In this particular case it appears that for some reason CM/DirectX seems to be assuming that you can't run at the 800x600 minimum resolution for CMBB. I suggest that you reinstall DirectX, and the current version is DirectX 9.0c (though this particular version isn't required for the CM series - it may match your video driver a little better however). After the required reboot you may then want to uninstall your video drivers (from the 'Add/Remove Software' control panel). You may want to download the latest video driver 61.77 and install it.

With all of this done (and the required reboots), run 'dxdiag' from the Start > Run menu and check out the tests on the 'Display' tab. They should all work and there should be no 'greyed out' buttons under the 'DirectX Features' section (they should all be 'disable' buttons - indicating that the feature is enabled).
