CMBO Playback problem

Recommended Posts

I checked past messages on this subject and couldn't find a solution. It's not NVidia video or Dell timing difficulties but seems to be related.

I've been playing CMBO on the same box for over a year with no problems. After an interval of Freedom Force, I came back to movies that wouldn't pause properly. If I don't pause, it will play just fine. If I do pause, it goes to the end immediately. I can back it to zero but when I press play, it goes to the end. (I can get snapshots every ten seconds but that's not fun.) This problem shows in my new PBEM game and in all my old saved games, no matter what source. It's all new and confusing to me.

Can anyone help?

FTR, I'm running CMBO v1.12 on Windows XP with an AMD Athlon 1 GHz chip, 256 MB RAM, and NVidia GeForce MX /MX 400 running a no-name monitor.

Nope, I was speaking in broad terms. I haven't run FF for several weeks before I got back to CMBO. I have re-installed everything but it still does that trick. Heck, it usually goes to the end as soon as I press play now. The Shift key allows me to see it in 2 second intervals but now I'm missing all the noise that I downloaded.

I saw something about changing the screen size or perhaps a different driver but I'd like to hear from someone who's smarter than me so they can tell what I need to do.

Which NVidia Detonators are you running ? When you mentioned that you 'reinstalled everything' what did you reinstall, the OS, the games ? If it was the OS was it a clean install or an installation over the previous OS ? Is your computer a particular brand name or do you know what motherboard brand and model you have ?

With a GeForce 2 series card the 30.8x drivers should be sufficient. Newer drivers probably aren't going to offer much in terms of optimization for the older chips. Depending on your motherboard chipset, you may want to install the chipset drivers for it, which on occasion helps with some AGP issues that can affect video cards.

Have you 'killed' almost every other process running on your computer before launching CM ? Some 'services' you can't kill because the OS is dependent on them. However you'll want to eliminate anything else that can be running in the background.

I wouldn't necessarily think that changing the screen size would help in this situation, but you can try it by deleting the CMBO Prefs file. You should be prompted to select a resolution the next time you launch CM starting at your current desktop resolution (but at a possibly higher refresh rate).

Thanks for all the advice. However, my video card is two years old and I don't know about any "detonators" in it. The driver is from the Windows XP software. (Should I get a newer one?) As for the re-install, it was just the game as the OS was installed before I even had CMBO so I don't think that's the problem. Oh, very few programs are running with CMBO, usually Explorer and/or Outlook Express so I don't think that's the problem.

I have cleaned up the drive, error-checked it and done other maintenance. I'm going to re-set the preferences and we'll see if it goes away.

P.S. I also got the '45 minute countdown' to show the movie problem someone else mentioned. That went away after some button pushing and went into a standard replay. Hope I don't see that again...

'Detonator' is the trademark name for NVidias driver family ('Catalyst' is the one ATI uses for its Radeon family of drivers).

Windows XP comes with the version 12.40 Detonator driver. This driver has some problems, but works in a limited manner. I'd highly suggest downloading and installing the 30.82 driver since this should provide the most compatibility. I have no idea if it will help with the timer problem (which is usually something else, but sometimes related to the video driver).
