Upgrade V3 3K to V5 5500 or not?

Recommended Posts

Thanks to the demise of 3dfx OEM V5 5500's are becoming available for pretty low prices.

I drool at the thought of having FSAA for CM but noticed old threads about V5 probs, know the card is driverless now etc. Have V3 now on a 960 mhz PIII and run CM at 1024 on a 17' monitor (Unbelievably, I was playing CM last night and my girlfriend looks at the screen and says "You need a bigger monitor.")

Can get the card for $120 and am sorely tempted. Does it make CM look that much better to justify the $60 to $70 bucks invested after I sell my V3?

Thanks

Lmandrake,

I usually hate to post replies about video cards as people can be pretty passionate about their choice and it ends up in arguments, but since your asking about one line here...

I had the Voodoo 3 2000 PCI last year and when the Voodoo4 came out for $149 (I know it was not that great of a card but I was upgrading from V3/PCI/2000 not the V3/AGP/3000) I bit. Could'nt make myself spend 300 for the V5. It was faster but to tell you the truth, I did not fall out of my chair when seeing the 2xFSAA. Besides, turning the 2xFSAA on on a V4 seemed to slow it down quite a bit. Within a month of buying the V4, the news came out about 3dfx and the V5 dropped from 300 to 189 so I could not help myself and got rid of the V4 for the V5. I could definetly tell a difference from 2xFSAA and 4xFSAA on the V5. It does look good. But is it worth the probably short life span of the V5? I.E. there are already a couple of issues with this card and CM, but will there be more with CM2 which might be out before year end?

It does not look like the current issues will be fixed let alone future issues.

Maybe if the store will take the V5 back after you try it out? If there was future driver support, a big YES.

Did you fall out of your chair?

Lmandrake,

If you can get one for $120, I'd say go for it. I run mine at 1024 on a 17 inch monitor with a T-bird 800 and the graphics are great with 4xFSAA. Yes, there are a couple of annoyances like the mouse droppings in the initial screen and the ESC to the desktop corruption. Performance wise, you can't compete with the 64Mb GeForce2 cards, but compared to what else you can get for $120 it's a steal.

Besides if you can sell your old card and get the price down to around $60 what else can you get for that? One round of golf with cart and a beer ~ $60. One day of skiing with lunch ~ $60. Dinner and a movie with the girlfriend ~ $100. Six months of CMBO with Full Screen Anti-Aliasing ~ priceless!
