John Kettler
Discovery Channel has the program on right now, but I don't know what the other segments will cover, though I do know that part of this segment will address armament for the Cougar. Edit Also shown with the Cougar was the CROWS (Common Remotely Operated Weapon System), capable of taking any weapon from a 5.56mm MG through a lightweight 30mm cannon. In tests with a .50 cal MG in the mount a coke can was hit on the first shot at 500 meter range. Uses laser gyroscopes to stabilize the mount permitting fire on the move with the gunner fully protected inside the vehicle. An excellent point was made that not only does this protect the gunner from snipers and IED blasts, but also from being crushed if the vehicle flips on its back. A remarkable piece of kit called Boomerang was shown. It apparently first saw service in 2004 in Iraq and uses TDOA (Time and Direction of Arrival) techniques on vehicle mounted system to not only detect incoming fire aimed at a Boomerang equipped vehicle, but displays and audibly reports azimuth and range within one second. Shot has only to be within 30 meters of the vehicle and from within 500 meters range in order for the system to work.
