Cant Find Preferences File

Recommended Posts

If you've never been able to exit from CMBB normally ('Quit' button or Alt-Q keystrokes), then the Prefs file will never get written out. Thus CMBB will ask what resolution you want to run CM at every time you launch it since this file isn't found.

To my recollection 640 x 480 is offered by CMBB, though it can't actually use that resolution. 800 x 600 is the minimum resolution that CMBB will run at (and be able to actually use the interface and see everything that is going on).

Typically CM will try the current desktop resolution first. So if you're running your desktop at 1024 x 768, then that would be the first resolution that CM would try. However instead of using the current vertical refresh rate that you may be using, CM queries the video driver and finds the highest supported vertical refresh rate supported by the driver. So you could normally be running your desktop at 1024 x 768 at 85Hz, but your driver may report that 120Hz vertical refresh is available at 1024 x 768. CM will try that 120Hz vertical refresh first which can result in a garbled screen for many monitors. If this is what you get (a garbled screen) don't press anything yet. Instead just wait until something legible appears on the screen. CM will automatically try the next lower refresh rate offered by the video driver within 5-10 seconds. Once it reaches 60Hz at a particular resolution it then drops down to the next standard resolution offered by the video driver (in this example, probably 800 x 600), but at the highest refresh rate offered for that resolution.

If the first thing that CM offers you is 640 x 480, then there may be something wrong with your setup. You need to be running your desktop at or above the resolution you would like to run CM at. Again, CM's first resolution offering will be your current desktop resolution, but at a possibly higher refresh rate. By only offering 640 x 480 there's the suggestion that something is wrong with your setup and no higher DirectX capable resolutions seem to be available. This could be a driver issue, a DirectX installation issue or some other piece of software interfering with CM's operation.
