demo problem

Recommended Posts

my friend is having problems with the demo.

his computer (im not a techie but heres the basics:

win 98

amd-k6 II 350 mhz

ati rage agp 4mb video card

128 megs ram

directx 8.0 installed

the demo comes up nicely, and the first scenario looks fine, and i was surprised at how good the graphics look with his low end system. but after about 20 seconds of starting the first scenario, the game locks up, and the last sounds heard begin to loop. ctrl+alt+delete is required to get out of this.

It may be possible that his soundcard and video card are sharing the same IRQ, which may cause problems for some computers. While sharing IRQs is normal, due to the amount of data sent to each item in CM there is a possibility of problems such as the one your friend is experiencing.

There are several possibilities to change the IRQs, but they require a bit of confidence and knowledge about what you're doing in Windows. To check if the video and sound are sharing IRQs go to the Start Menu > Settings > Control Panel > System control panel > Device Manager tab > double-click on the "Computer" icon in the listing. This should bring up a tabbed dialog box that will initially display the IRQ assignments (with the IRQ number to the left of the item). Look through the listing for the video card and the sound card and see if they're sharing the same IRQ. If they are, then changing this around may solve the problem. However changing this isn't really easy and is dependent on your system.
