Fatal Exception Blue Screen

Recommended Posts

I couldn't run the beta demo without this problem occurring every other turn or so.

Recently ran the Gold demo, ran about 10 turns, and then had the blue screen whammy again.

My puter runs fine. Never have this come up in any other applications.

I run a K6-2 with 128M, a humongous harddrive, and a Rage Pro Turbo AGP video card with 8M.

I'm heartsick. I've seen enough of the demo to have fallen in lust, but I don't want to buy a game that'll always crash on me.

Please help

Win98SE

"Fatal Exception" (Can't remember the rest.)

All I know is that it did NOT give the usual "press return to try and get back to normal" type schpiel. It said "fatal error. Blah, blah, blah. Reboot your system."

Have not tried disabling sound. Seems like it would kinda ruin the experience, doesn't it?

No, I wasn't trying anything uniquely different that what I'd done for the ten turns prior to that.

I suggested turning off audio to see if somehow processing audio data in CM was crashing your computer. Most people don't get the Blue Screen of Death with CM. The problems usually range from lockups to dropping to the desktop.

You may want to do a search on the Tech Support forum for a program called EndItAll. This will kill all other programs that are running (which you can do manually with Ctrl-Alt-Del). You will also want to disable any programs/utilities running in the background.

The ATI AGP cards should run OK with CM. They won't support the fog effect however. For some users (where it has typically been a lockup problem) I've suggested that they reduce their "AGP Aperture" in their CMOS/BIOS setup (if it is even available) to under 16Mb. For a couple of users this has helped.

You may want to update your drivers for your ATI Rage Pro Turbo. Keep an installable copy of your current drivers in case these cause problems or don't work.

There are "RageLTMan's" tweaked drivers on this page that may be worth downloading and checking out also.
