aka_tom_w
Does anyone know if there is a CMBO scenario made for this action? the Armoured Advance on the Evening of Aug 7 with the Poles in there Sherms working with the Canadians on that evening in the dark? Thanks -tom w "Historical Background After the fall of Caen, France on July 9th, 1944, General Montgomery ordered the 2nd Canadian Corp to drive on Falaise in an operation code-named Totalize. With Falaise taken, the entire German army in Normandy would be encircled. The Germans, already under threat from the American army in and around St. Lo, threw together a Panzer Division to keep the gap at Falaise open. This refight is representative of many battles fought by the Canadians in France during August 7th--16th, 1944. The present small-scale action hinges on a crossroads near St. Sylain on August 8th. The Canadians, racing for Falaise, get caught by the German counter-stroke. "
Iron Cross
You might want to try my "Worthington Force" Scenario. You can find it at www.dragonlair.net/combatmission/ Worthington Force consisted of the 28th Armoured Regiment (The British Columbia Regiment) and three companies of the Algonquin Regiment. Lieutenant-Colonel D.G. Worthington, regimental commander of the BCRs commanded. He was a young, energetic officer who was being considered by Kitching as a future armoured brigade commander. Worthington's plan envisioned advancing south along the east side of the Caen-Falaise highway, bypassing enemy resistance at Bretteville-le-Rabet by circling left, and then swinging right, across the highway, to reach the objective. Title & Location: Worthington Force; 2km SE of Estrees-la Campagne; Hill 140. Scenario Version Number: 2.0 CM Editor Version: Version 1.12 Date: August 9, 1944 Game Type: Meeting Engagement Based On: Historical engagement Game Length: 1 Battle/ 45 Turns Map* Size: Medium Conditions (Weather/TOD): Day, Dry Ground Play first as: German/Attacker Description: As part of Operation "Totalize" 2nd Canadian Corps. advances south along the Caen-Falaise Hwy. Andreas
Tom, judging from Tout's 'Tank!' and his later 'A fine night for tanks', both about this battle (it was not just Canuckians and Polish, you know, the Pommies got to play to), there was little to no organised fighting in the dark. The proverbial hit the fan when dawn came, and the Germans realised that they had an armoured brigade with infantry in APCs about 5 miles inside their defensive belt. The aim of Totalize Phase 1 (the night attack) was to put the forces in a position where in the morning they could dig out the German strongpoints in places like Gaumesnil. Which they duly did. So the closest would be Helge's (Desertfox) 'Cintheaux Totalize, and Franko's battle (the name of which I can not remember). Lt-Col. Worthington managed to get his men (and himself) killed because he was unable to read a map during the day as well.
