XP lockup with S3 Savage2000 vid card

Recommended Posts

I just installed XP and got this 64MG vid card, however, CM locks up most of the time now, after playing a few minutes. I run AMD 2 500 3D and 400 Mg RAM. I found drivers for the card but they are not "approved". Does anyone have advice concerning this? I think it is also somehow interfering with my cable modem connection??

Thanks for your help...

Does your card have a particular name-brand or is it generic ? What particular 'unofficial' driver are you using ? Are you using any of the tweaker programs ? Do you have any other lockup problems with your computer outside of CM ? What motherboard do you have and have you checked for the latest BIOS release ?

Unfortunately S3 Savage 2000 cards aren't a good buy. S3 hasn't released any driver updates for them recently and I believe that they consider the product discontinued. I've heard rumors that S3 is making some new 3D chips, but I don't know if they will be seen in a commercial product or not. S3's graphic division is now a part of VIA (the Taiwanese chipset manufacturer) and they've concentrated on making 'intergrated northbridge video chipsets' for primarily the laptop market (with a few desktop designs).

Thanks Schrullenhaft for your reply.

I got this motherboard put in about 2 years ago. I have amd 2 500 chip and the vid card is called

Savage 2000 3D with 64MGs onboard. I have 400 mgs of RAM on my Mother board. I think I will take this card back to the shop and ask for one more compatible. Besides CMBO locking up, I experience conflict with my NIC card as the video goes out during boot up if the cable is plugged into the modem.. I can only get online when in Safe mode - then video and web function normally...XP boots normally when not connected to the web It appears to me that there is not much solution. Do you have an inexpensive suggestion for a reliable video card to use with XP? I believe that this cheezy Savage 2000 card is the problem...(I have no idea what a tweak is)

I appreciate your help

The AMD K6-2 500MHz CPU you have is sitting in a Super Socket 7 motherboard. Unfortunately these types of motherboards often have problems with AGP cards, especially ones with a lot of RAM and high electrical current requirements. You may find that you'll have trouble with several types of higher performance video cards and this motherboard (this is just a guess however).

On the inexpensive side you may want to try out a GeForce2 MX400. If you can find one with 64Mb of RAM that would be great; you may be able to find some for less than US$100. You may also want to consider getting a PCI card if you intend to keep your motherboard for awhile. Though I couldn't exactly say that a PCI card will have less problems with your motherboard than an AGP card would, it is a possibility.

The Savage 2000 probably would have been a fairly decent card in its day, but S3 has always had lack luster driver support and these cards just had too many problems, lack of feature support or mediocre performance.
