Sgt CDAT
system setup 64meg GeForce 3 AGP w/the 12.41 drivers MB VIA KT-133 AMD duron 900 with new 4-1 driver WinMe w/DX 8 17" Plug and Play monitor CM 1.12 The problem that I am having is that the game is too dark, I can not even see the roads. I have my monitor brightness setting maxed. I have the gamma setting in the game set to highest. What I have noticed is that when I start the game it changes the setting to the default setting for my card. I have incresed the gamma with my card but when CM lauches it goes back to the default settings which are too dark for the game. When I esc to the desktop I can see the map at the setting that I want but when I bring it back up it goes back to being too dark. I have deleted the preference file and it does not work. Nothing that I have tried so far works and I have tried for 3 day to fix this problem. Is there a way that I can force CM to use the gamma setting or change that default for my card! I have Half-Life and it uses my gamma settings and not the default so this is only in CM. [ 07-05-2001: Message edited by: Sgt CDAT ] [ 07-05-2001: Message edited by: Sgt CDAT ]
Schrullenhaft
What is the exact model of your 17" Plug and Play monitor ? The monitor can make a big difference. I have a GeForce 3 with the 12.41 drivers on a Trinitron-based monitor and CM appears fine at the standard gamma setting in CM. What kind of controls are available on your monitor ? Can you adjust the white point/color temp (9500/9300 is what you'd probably want for CM) ? Have you adjusted your contrast controls too ? You may need to find the right balance between contrast and brightness when running CM with your particular monitor. Does your monitor have a voltage level adjustment (usually found on the rear of the monitor with a choice of .7V or 1V - choose .7V and see if this makes a difference) ? Drivers can make a very big difference. The default gamma of many PC drivers is usually quite dark (especially compared to Macs). At some point in the past NVidia's default gamma was lowered (darker) from one driver version to another (probably somewhere in the late 5.xx series). Some games seem to work fine for this ('first person shooters') and others like CM don't adjust very well with it. You can also try NVMax. I believe that they'll be releasing a v. 3.0 sometime soon, but this is what I could find for now (click on "Download Site 1" or "..2" to get the file): NVMax: http://www.tweakfiles.com/video/nvmax.html PowerStrip is another "shareware" product you could try out also that may adjust your Gamma settings for CM. Douglas Rudd
Go into the control panel for your vid card, there will be gamma settings, I set mine to be like the Voodoo cards, 1.3, sometimes 1.5. Doug

What kind of controls are available on your monitor ? Can you adjust the white point/color temp (9500/9300 is what you'd probably want for CM). Nope just brightnees and contrast(witch I forgot to metion that I also have the contrast maxed also) and the screen adjustments. Does your monitor have a voltage level adjustment (usually found on the rear of the monitor with a choice of .7V or 1V - choose .7V and see if this makes a difference)? Monitor runs on .7v only. Tried them(like powerstrip the best)and several others but none work! Thanks for the help! What I have noticed is that in 256 color I do not have the option to change the color settings with the GeForce card? Is this the way yours is? It is only in 16 bit and 32 bit that I can do this.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Douglas Rudd: Go into the control panel for your vid card, there will be gamma settings, I set mine to be like the Voodoo cards, 1.3, sometimes 1.5.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> I set it to 2.0 but the problem is that CM dumps this when it lanches and goes to the default setting! Thanks! [ 07-09-2001: Message edited by: Sgt CDAT ]
Sgt CDAT
Ok I have tried everything to get it to work but can't! What I would like to do is set the default gamma setting higher. I have NVIDIA BIOS Modification Program, VGABIOS to check it and NVFlash. I have backed up that bios but I don't have the know how on what I need to change. If someone here does can you send me a script that will do that with the values I can use. All I want to do is change the gamma setting higher. My BIOS ver is 3.20.00.10.02

Groznyj
I have the exact same problem. My monitor is 6 years old and really tired and abused. I have to really crank up the gamma and brightness in the display properties so I can even see the desktop. CM won't use those settings though and a day battle is like night and night is completely unplayable. I have tried every driver from the 6.35 that came with the video card to 23.11 with no difference. Is there anything I can do short of buying a new monitor? I know that will solve all my problems but I can make every other game work just fine. Groz
Schrullenhaft
On the PC you can press Alt-G to cycle through CM's Gamma settings. Whether this will be enough, I don't know. More than likely if you're having problems seeing your desktop, you really need a new monitor.
Groznyj
I've done the alt-g and just isn't enough. I can make everything look fine by cranking up the brightness and gamma and lowering the contrast in the color correction part of display properties. Every other game I play keeps these settings and looks fine. For some reason CM doesn't use these settings and it's too dark to play. I guess I'm just waiting for BTS to say that's how they intended it to be and buy a new monitor. I'd really like to keep this monitor for a few more years until it dies completely. Go buy a new monitor it will be worth it, trust me!
