Doug Beman
Howdy. I've finally re-established my home Internet connection through Verizon DSL. To keep things simple, I wasn't using my router initially. During the installation of the modem's software a dialog box said "updating IE and OE settings as needed." Everything worked fine, I was able to surf, send/receive email, etc. After a while I decided to put the router back in the loop both to improve my security and so I can bring my older PC into the LAN. I went through the router's interface to tell it what type of 'net connection to look for (DSL/PPP over Ethernet for Verizon), and reset the router for the changes to take effect. Now, I can surf the web but I cannot access my email, neither Verizon's account nor Hotmail. The "connecting" dialog box keeps telling me it can't establish a connection and times out. I used Verizon's little help-utility, and it reports that my email service should be working just fine. I called the DSL support line and they said there're no problems with the email service, we confirmed the password that I was given, and made sure that OE is correctly config'd. Yet I still can't send/receive email. Does anybody have any suggestions? I really don't want to have to cut my router out of the loop again. Doug Beman
Never mind. Something borked my OE settings; even though the email account parameters (incoming/outgoing server names, etc) LOOKED okay, deleting all accounts and rebuilding them corrected the trouble. Michael Emrys
Doug, it's interesting that you had this problem a couple of weeks after I had a similar one with OE that also required a rebuild to fix. If many more of these turn up in the near future, I'm gonna start to wonder if OE isn't a time-expired product. Michael
Doug Beman
In hindsight, while I was deleting accounts from OE, I remember there being a LOT of accounts beyond what is necessary for email & news. One of the "directory" accounts still had info from my @rcn.com days, so it's entirely possible there was a conflict. Oh well, back to the wonder of online-ness.
