Do you know if your Voodoo3 and your SB Live are sharing the same IRQ ? If they are then you will need to find a way (whether it is changing PCI slots or settings in the CMOS/BIOS setup) to assign them different IRQs.

You may need to experiment with some of your DirectX settings in the DirectX setup applet (C:\PROGRAM FILES\DIRECTX\SETUP\DXDIAG.EXE). Go to the Video tab and disable the Direct3D and possibly the other controls. You may also want to go to the Sound tab and adjust the Audio Hardware Acceleration slider and/or turn off the sound in CM to see if this makes any sort of difference in your lockups.

I'd also suggest getting the latest Voodoo drivers. This may address some of the issues with high-quality smoke (I can't recall).
