random CD checks

Recommended Posts

I've lately noticed that my computer seems to be running random checks of the CD drive when I'm running CM. This is extremely frustrating when I'm viewing the movie files because it causes my screen to freeze for 1-2 seconds. It happens about every 10 seconds and it's really starting to irritate me. I'm running XP and a TNT2 with the latest detonator drivers and am also a victim of the well known NVIDIA driver issues, but this CD check business irritates me even more. Is this standard with CM or is my computer just screwed up? I've never noticed it this bad before.

I'd guess that this is not due to the copy-protection routines for CMBO (but this is a possibility). Rather I think it is WinXP that is checking for the presence of a CD (removable media). I don't know how to change this behavior. In the Control Panels go to Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Storage > Removable Storage > Libraries > your CDROM drive will be listed here, right click on it and select Properties. On the General tab (initial) > Deferred Dismounts > experiment with this value by increasing or decreasing it and see if it changes your problem.

There are probably some registry tweaks to affect this behavior, but I don't know what they may be.
