CD/Video Problem?

Recommended Posts

I am having a problem with CMBB -- I've checked your discussion forum, and I'm not sure whether the problem is with my CD or my PC. When I first tried to install the game, it installed about 95%, then quit. When I tried to re-install but NOT overwrite, it got to about the same place, then quit again. On my third try, I reinstalled WITH overwrite, and the install completed successfully, I think. At least, it wrapped up, and I got an item for CMBB in my Start Menu. When I try to run the game (regardless of resolution), I get the splash screen and then the menu screen ok. But when I choose a scenario (I tried several different ones), I only get the info bar at the bottom of the screen. The whole battleground area of the screen is blank, except for a window with the message "loading 3D Graphics..."). And that's all I get. I get sounds, too (birds, far-off artillery), but no video. If I choose, I can get the Hotkey screen, Quit screen, etc., to come up, but no game graphics.

I have a 500MHz computer (WIN98, DirectX8.1) with a RIVA TNT video card. The video drivers are old -- I went to the nvidia site, but they no longer seem to support that card anymore -- just the TNT2 and later. As a point of reference, I have no problems running CMBO on my system.

So, I did have trouble getting the game to load, and I also am unable to get it to play. I'm not sure whether this is a CD problem, or a video card problem, or both. I just wanted to let you know I potentially have a problem with my CD, in case you are collecting names for the CD re-issue that Mattmatt talked about in his post. Or, in case you (or anyone else) has tested/run CMBB with my video card.

The 29.20's are the last drivers I saw from NVidia to support the standard TNT (NV4). The TNT Vantas (NV5) are the minimum supported chips with the latest drivers.

You can get the 29.20's from Guru 3D (Videocard Drivers > NVidia detonator drivers > on the third page is the Win9x 29.20 drivers).

I would suggest uninstalling your current video drivers, installing the 'Standard PCI SVGA' driver after rebooting and then installing the newer video drivers.
