Hans
Both the generic name and a brand name from the French speaking historians out there! Example in American English Gas station Shell gas station
Hensworth
Look here. Click on the oil can and then 'Catalogue'. The second assembly seems to be closest to the 1940s.
Tarkus
I don't know about France but here in Québec we say: Station service like in: Station Service Caltex Station d'essence ou Poste d'essence could also do. From cpt. Kelly's link, apparently there was a brand named "Eco". Talk about foresight. HTH
dieseltaylor
I think in 1940 service stations might have been exceedingly rare. Most gaz sales would have been carried out at garages [ good French word but anglicised very quickly 1902] or if anything like England the blacksmith or possibly a chemist would be the dispenser in rural areas. A garagiste is the owner or even the mechanic In any event the name of the owner would be the dominant feature with smaller plaques showing what was sold. I am not quite sure how you want to use the information so cannot research further.
Hans
Thanks Gentlemen with the help with the French. Having looked at it I would think DieselT might be closest. So I'll go with a Garage. Unless someone can come up with something more concrete. Thanks Sgt Kelly - to think people collect that stuff!
