Umm....it might have a marginally larger diameter, but it is not a bigger shell!! There's almost no weight of case - the whole thing only weighed 40 lbs, and was almost all HE.

IIRC the 11" shells from the German BC's weighed something like 600 lbs.

I'm not sure hat the spigot diameter was - much smaller than 290mm obviously, but it had a very small propellant charge - hence the low range, and also why it could get away with not having a heavy steel shell to contain the explosive.

That assumes the shells are equal in all other dimensions!!

Since the dustbin is about a foot long and the 11" shell is about 4 foot (49" base fused, 50.1" noze fused) long it doesn' apply.

Sheesh - FYI the 11" shell had either 35 or 48 lbs of bursting charge (nose or base fuse respectively), and weighed 694.4 lbs (both).
