Robert Mayer Posted December 21, 2000 Share Posted December 21, 2000 A good budget card would be a GeForce 2 MX-based card, like the ELSA Gladiac MX or the Hercules 3D Prophet II MX, both of which give you good performance for little (less that $150) money. The MX models are a tad slower than the full-bore GeForce 2s, but really, unless you are going to be playing lots of shooters at high resolution, they're fine. Absolutely no slowdowns on my 700mhz P3 If you search the net you can find places that are selling 64MB GTS cards for $250 to $300 US. Not quite as good as the Geforce2 Ultra but the 64MB really makes a big difference. Robert is right. I have not regretted my decision. Going to this card from a VooDoo variant is like the awe inspiring moment when I went from a 2 MB Trident to a VooDoo 1 about 4-5 years ago. The Ultra allows me to play CM at 1600X1200 res very nicely and Quake 3 at 1240x1078 w/ NO slowdowns (all eye candy on and detail maxed w/ 32 bit color). Im running a PIII 800...non overclocked. Be warned...Nvidia's antialiasing is not up to par with 3dfx's and you can even bring the mighty Ultra 2 to its knees by enabling it. Hey, but who needs FSAA at very high resolutions?
