Chicago Boy
Does anyone else notice that in a quick battle the enemy artillery is always a smoke screen? I have played several battles as the Germans against The Allies and every time-if and when there-is an arty strike it is always a smoke screen. I have read several accounts of the Normandy campaign and nowhere does it say that the Germans cowered in fear at the bottom of their foxholes in fear of the Allied arty's ability to lay smoke. I have been bombarded by 81mm mortars but all the heavier stuff is always smoke. Knowing the excellence of the allied artillery, something the German veterans always note, I was wondering if anybody else noticed this? Hello from the Windy City. Von Brizee
I've had them use 105 arty on me quite a bit when I play as Germans. If you are entrenched quite well, shelling is almost useless, but smoking you up allows their men to close in for assault.
von Lucke
In my experience, I've found that it depends on the situation: If yr handing the AI it's virtual ass, it will start laying smoke in an attempt to obscure the LOF of yr units. I've also seen it lay in an HE barrage on my position if I'm advancing and halt for a turn, or if I'm dug-in and the AI is advancing on me. On the other hand, I've never seen it use smoke to screen it's own advance...
