IIRC, the "lip´s" purpose is to snag on the edge of the Halftracks

(when firing from inside the vehicle)

thus preventing the weapon from accidently slipping inside the vehicle.

Ah! That was it. I knew I had something wrong, but didn't feel like cracking open any books to figure out what smile.gif Funny how the thinking behind this fairly major design feature is not definately known for sure.
