Guest gyrene251
With the simulated game time of 20 - 30 minutes, it's possible for engineers to remove mines in that time. And yes, they did it under fire! (Removing mines while undergoing an artillery attack is nbot fun!) I know, my grandfather was an engineer during WW2 and I have written a book on his unit. Doug Beman
gyrene, I looked at the accounts of the Rhine and Central Germany, but couldn't see any references to clearing/breaching minefields under fire. I couldn't see a reference to or excerpts from your book; which link do I need to click? DjB
Guest gyrene251
No excerpts from my book are on the web site yet (working on it) but here is a write up on one of the engineers: "Company A/270 T/5 Lloyd Porter - source: General Order No. 33 dated 29 April 1945 Bronze Star, (deceased): for heroic achievement in action 18 February 1945. When heavy artillery fire pinned down the infantry in Etzling, France, Technician Porter and a comrade left cover to clear enemy mines from the path of friendly tanks. His courageous action in breaching the minefields enabled the armor to move forward and successfully support the infantry in the accomplishment of its mission." Colin
I'm an idiot but by that description it sounds like that was a pretty isolated occurance. It it happened often enough for CM I doubt that he would have been awarded a Bronze Star. ------------------ Visit my Combat Mission for Mac page! Guest gyrene251
For more examples, go to http://www.trailblazersww2.org/awards.htm Look for the engineers. It happened quite a bit.
