Tree bug in CM DEMO (v1.02 engine)...

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am playing Combat Mission DEMO (v1.02 engine) and I like it a lot!

Nonetheless I discovered one very annoying bug... :-(

When you position your units in "Setup Phase" and then save the game, the next

time you load that saved game the trees will _NOT_ be at exact the same

positions they were before.

This is really bad if you spend a lots of times for individual positioning of

your units and carefully examined their LoS (Line of Sight)...

Is this fixed in full game v1.03 ?

There is a misunderstanding here: the 'trees' are only symbols to represent the terrain tile, not individual trees.

At the length scale of Combat Mission it is possible to homogenize the bi-phasical (trees, air) medium into a 'smeared-out' medium, where LoS degrades gradually and not stepwise (or treewise for that matter) like in true woods.

So only the distance of the unit to the wood terrain edge determines it's visibility, not it's relation to the tree sprites. This is a necessary and reasonable abstraction.

Oh dear, that was a bit of a wasted effort.

Try pressing Shift-T until the trees disappear. You will notice that the different areas of the map have different ground textures. These are the important bits - the actual tree graphics are just to make things a bit more convincing. Hence you can choose different tree-coverage levels without making any difference to gameplay.

It would make things a bit complicated if you had to plot paths for your units around every single tree... much more elegant this way. =)

Well, I thought the same thing to start with. I reckoned vehicles would have to maneuvre around each tree, as they do in Close Combat. What a real pain. I'm very glad woods are abstracted in Combat Mission.

Hello,

Thank you all for replaying and helping me solve this!

Please note that in demo documentation there was absolutely nothing that would

explain this and I, therefore, had to ask... :)

BTW, I am old computer wargamer (15 years of experience) and really love

this CM game!

Not to mention the trench foot and crotchrot.

Never fear, Foo. You're a true heart of oak. All your Elma Mater says so. Just ask Lindan. wink.gif

Sounds like 100% weapons-grade bolonium to me.
