Morale and Close Combat

Recommended Posts

How big a role will morale play in close quaters fighting with AFVs? Will a morale check (or the CM equivalent) be needed before a German squad uses Anti-tank magnetic mines, Panzerfausts and panzerschrecks? This of course would apply to allies with LATW.

BTW will German squads even be using atm mines?

In a similar situation, will going toe to toe with fortifications using satchel charges, flamethowers ect require morale checks before or during...maybe both.

Will the CM engine allow for "heat of battle"? That is, going bezerk and charging the enemy? Can heros be created? Or do they appear in the form of a morale boost to the squad, team or platoon?

Thanks for putting up with twenty questions! smile.gif

Yes, units ordered to take out a tank MUST pass a "morale check" to see if they are up to it. If not, they stay put. Units will also run away from a tank if it gets too close (forget the range), unless they are sturdy enough to take on the vehicle.

Units do not have to pass a specific check for the type of weapon they are using. Even PFs were VERY dangerous to use, though we might make the morale threshold slightly lower for them since they were more "stand offish" than something like a magnetic mine or satchel charge.

We don't know what to do about AT mines. They weren't allocated in any consistant way, so we were planning on having combat engineers having them as well as satchel charges. After Normandy the Germans pretty much ran out of the cone shaped magnetic mines due to shortages of magnets in any case.

We weren't planning on doing anything special for attacking a bunker. Our logic is that if your guys actually managed to get close enough to use a flamethrower, satchel charge, grenades, etc. they have already "passed" the test. Unlike a tank, a bunker is predictable. It can only fire from obvious locations and can't suddenly turn around to change fire arcs. This should be very reassuring to the men attacking it smile.gif

No to heros and bezerk in the close combat sense. Units will do some pretty amazing things, for sure, but we aren't tracking them specifically. You'll know who the heros are by their actions smile.gif
